The bell rang and I was dreading lunch. My friends weren’t able to talk in class. They were going to attack me in 3...2...1...
“Oh my goodness Liz! How weird was that?” squealed Jennifer.
I slapped her arm and looked around at the nearby students. They were giving us weird looks but lost interest after a few seconds.
“Be quiet you idiot! Nobody can know what happened. He’s already pissed off that you told him we were nineteen.”
“Well I think you guys are adorable,” purred Michelle as she walked past us.
I rolled my eyes and ignored Zach’s curious looks. Michelle would tell him everything later anyway. All I needed to worry about was keeping their mouths shut. No reason to alert the whole school. Especially since my dad was on the police force.
We grabbed our lunches as I directed everyone to a table in the back. Our usual group tried to catch out attention but I ignored them. They gave up after a while and let us eat alone.
“There better be a good reason why we’re back here because the guys are going to give me such a hard time,” complained Zach. He shoved a handful of fries in his mouth and attempted to glare at me. That ended up morphing into a grin which turned into him laughing and spitting potato everywhere.
“Gross!” squealed Jennifer, throwing a carrot directly at the center of his forehead.
“Okay children,” I sighed, putting my arm between them. “My track team is going to kill me for sitting back here but I need to do some damage control.”
I quickly explained to Zach what happened which he thought was hilarious. The only part that had him upset was how drunk Michelle got. He hated when she drank and wasn’t much of a drinker himself.
“So now you all understand why I can’t let this get out. He’ll get fired and my parents will kill me. They probably would never trust me again and all dreams of going to California will be thrown out the window.”
“Good,” nodded Michelle and Jennifer.
I looked at both of them in surprise and tilted my head for one of them to elaborate.
“We don’t want you to go to the west coast. All three of us will miss you a lot and it won’t be the same,” answered Jennifer.
Before I could answer Zach let out a low whistle and stared at the lunch line. I followed his eyes and saw that Adrian was buying something from the register. Next to him was the Ms. Williams or “Cougar” as we liked to call her.
It wasn’t because of her age. Actually, Ms. Williams was only twenty five. We called her cougar because she had golden hair and liked to rip guys apart. She would set her sights on someone and wouldn’t give up until they were hers. Once she was bored with them then they were tossed aside like yesterdays trash.
“Looks like Ms. Cougar has her eyes on the fresh meat. Maybe he’ll be the one to actually tame her,” said Zach, not taking his eyes off of them.
Michelle’s blue eyes lit up in irritation as she flicked her blond hair over her shoulder. This was her signature ‘I’m going to kick your butt’ move. Zach must’ve noticed because he swooped down and gave her a soft kiss on the lips.
“You know I don’t like her babe. She’s gross and you’re unbelievably hot.”
Michelle tired to hold her angry look but that didn’t work for very long. Even if Zach was my friend I could admit that his boyish looks made him very attractive. Everything from the messy black hair to the ice blue eyes hard Michelle melting against him.
