The alarm clock sitting on my bedside table started ringing loudly, waking me from my sleep. I groaned and reached a hand out from under the covers, summoning the strength it took to turn it off. When my hand encountered a long, smooth and flat surface, I patted around it, moving my hand and looking for that blasted clock.

Where the hell is it?

I felt something round, I tapped the top and got a hold of it. It shut up but fell. I sighed and tucked my hand under the covers, burrowing and curling into a ball. Just as I reached blessed sleep, I felt something bright hit my eyes and instead of black, my eyelids looked yellow. I groaned.

"Come on, Brixy, time to wake up!" a hand shook my shoulder, I just turned away and tried to hide further in my bed, the cushion deepened under my weight and I sighed. "Come on! Brixy! It's time for school! You don't want to be late on the first day of school, now do you?"

I groaned again and ignored my maid. She was forever nagging me every day. Well... except for summer. I shut my eyes and ignored the light seeping through my blanket, momentarily blinding me. I imagined those blessed days of summer when no one cared if I slept in or woke up late.

"Brixy!" her annoying voice brought me back to reality.

"Go away!" I mumbled.

"Right, and leave you here with your bed? I don't think so," I heard her cluck like a mother hen.

Ugh!

"Can't you trust me?" I called out, my voice muffled through my blanket.

I could almost see her shaking her head and muttering something about 'not being able to trust on me on this'. Which teenager in the world would she be able to trust with a bed and sleep? None. Who in the right mind would refuse sleep? Just the thought of school, zoned me out again.

I gasped when I felt the cold air on my legs. I huddled and opened one of my eyes, I saw my maid's disapproving face loom over me like the thought of school. She was holding my blanket with one hand, the other on her hip. I shut my eyes and groaned.

"Brix! Babe, come on! You know Sophie isn't patient!" I heard my twin brother, Alex, call out from downstairs, probably the living room.

I just picked up my pillow and placed it over my head, hoping to black out the unnecessary noise. Wishing that they'd give me some space or cut me some slack. I'm not like my super-cheerful, devil-may-care, early bird gets the early worm twin! And besides, he's just a ladies' man who uses fishing or hunting terms to get a girl. Why God gave me such a brother let alone a twin – I have no idea.

I buried my head further into the pillow and was going to drift into sleep when I heard Alex's hideous voice again.

"BRIX! DON'T LET ME COME AND GET YOU!" Alex must be pretty serious because he didn't call me 'babe'. It's his pet name for me, he says I'll always be his baby sister.

Yeah right, like he's the one whose three minutes older!

I just humor him though. I learned long ago, better to be the one to make peace than the one waiting for an apology. I hate waiting.

Upon hearing Alex's threat, I straightened and stretched in my bed, yawning loud enough for Alex to know I'm up. I looked at Mary, my maid, she just shook her head at me and proceeded to pick up my alarm clock. I glared at it, choosing to blame it for all the sacrifices I'm going to have to be doing for school. Who invented school anyway?
