The young girl stood. Her filth encrusted blond hair matted against sharp cheekbones and her large eyes turned to the sky as if in prayer. Her small thin frame seemed to sway with the machine generated breeze as she stood before two men. One watched the scrawny girl with a critical eye while the other gazed on with sympathy.

‘She is only a child, little over fourteen.’ The taller of the two said, folding his arms over his military uniform, coving the ‘LtCol Mathews’ label on his chest.

‘She fits the criteria though, Sir. No bad medical history, fertile, no bad genes. Her immune system in impeccable. Although she looks unhealthy now, sir, with a shower and a good feeding she’ll be as right as rain.’ The lower ranking officer said, glancing at his comrade.

‘I suppose,’ the lieutenant watched the frail girl. She was nothing but a mere sack of bones and skin, covered only by a tattered shirt that was so dirty you couldn’t recognize its original colour.

The young girl tore her eyes away from the ceiling, landing her gaze on the two men.

‘What are you going to do to me?’ She asked, her voice a soft echo in the large hall.

The lieutenant sighed, running his fingers through his hair. ‘Nothing that is really important. We’ll give you a bath, a place to sleep and food to eat. That is all you need to know.’

‘What about my family? Will they come too?’

The lieutenant could feel his heart ice over at her words; this was the one part about his job he truly despised.

‘We’ll have them brought over soon.’

The girl nodded, and hugging her arms around her chest, she looked back up in prayer.

‘Take her to the barracks, make sure she is kept busy.’ The lieutenant ordered his command, watching as his comrade ushered the young girl out the room.

He knew he’d never see the child again, and if he did, it’d be only under the worst circumstances.

‘What about my family?’

The question echoed in his head, causing deep frown lines to appear on his forehead.

She’s going somewhere better, he consoled himself. The human race needs her.
