You never thought a day like this would come. A day where you would be staring out at the ocean on a cliff face somewhere in Hawaii...with an urn filled with your mother's ashes.
Your mother always wanted to go to Hawaii you see. It was her favorite place. Favorite culture. She loved especially the mythology that came wrapped up in it.
You thought back to when you were growing up, young and energetic, fighting off the need to sleep. Only to have your battle interrupted by your mother.
"Belissa Orza, do you know what time it is?" Your mother, Aurora Orza, scolded. "But mama, I'm not tired," you whined, plopping down onto your bed with a loud THUMP.
You remember hearing her signature chuckle before feeling the bed dip as she sat down.
"You are not tired? Well I guess there's only one thing that could possibly help this situation." You look up from where you were laying. "What would that be mama?" You ask, hoping you were right on what her response would be.
"why who else could help a young girl such as yourself sleep? Why the great Demigod Maui!" Your mother stands and poses as you would imagine Maui would.
"Mama!" You giggle sitting up.
"What?" She questions "You think the God of the Wind and Sea, Shapeshifter, and Hero of Ma- no Hero of all can't help one 5 year old girl go to sleep?" Your mother then runs out of your room quickly and returns with a book in her hand.
"My dear Bell you must have faith." She smiles at you while resting the book at the foot of your bed. "For a Demigod such as he, with his fierce love of all mankind, knows just the thing to put little girls such as you to rest." You scoot to the to the top of your bed while listening, lifting up slightly as you mother picked the covers up to help you get under them and get settled in your bed.
"What does he do mama?" You question, laying back into your pillows. " Well my sweet," she says picking up the book, " Long ago before even I was born, it was said that Maui his self came to the islands that were inhabited by all who adores him and he would tell stories of all of his adventures to the children as the village feasted in his honor. And as he told the stories, they were recorded and put into a book much like this one here, so children like you could hear about his great feats while falling asleep." As your mother said this, you smiled knowing that your mother loved doing this the most. Your loved it too for Maui was as important to you as he was to your mother, for he helped give you both this time together. Your mother was a nurse for a major hospital and was on call for long hours.
Anytime you to could be like this, made all the long hours worth it to get and to you.
"Alright let's see. What would you like to hear about Belissa?" Your mother asks.
"I wanna hear about the goddess and her heart."
She chuckles knowing this was your favorite. "Alright, the legend of te fiti and her heart." She turns to you now with the book in her hands and begins.
"In the beginning..."

"Te Fiti was the first entity to appear in the world inhabited only by the ocean. As an all-powerful goddess, Te Fiti used her life-giving heart to spread the gift of life across the world, creating multiple islands that would be inhabited by flora, fauna, and humans. Following her vast creation, Te Fiti laid herself to rest and formed her body into an island. Over the time, Te Fiti's heart became a much-desired treasure. Villainous thieves such as the giant crab Tamatoa and bloodthirsty Kakamora pirates pirates all sought the heart for their own nefarious purposes and self-interests. Only the mischievous and highly-praised demigod Maui was daring enough to invade Te Fiti's shores in hopes of giving her heart to mortals as a gift. Using his shapeshifting abilities, Maui found Te Fiti's spiral and stole the heart. As a result of its removal, the island fell into darkness, and the physical entity of Te Fiti morphed into a demonic shell of her former self: Te Kā.

As Maui made a hasty escape on his boat, a vengeful Te Kā rose from her cloud and confronted the demigod. Their battle resulted in the loss of the heart, and as punishment for his crimes, Te Kā banished Maui to a desolate spit of land in the middle of the open ocean, where he would be doomed to remain stranded for eternity. As further punishment, Te Kā sentenced the entirety of mankind to death and placed a devastating curse upon the world. As the curse slowly spread across the seas, food supply, flora, and fauna were destroyed, thus making it impossible for humanity to survive. According to legend, only the restoration of Te Fiti's heart can save the other corners of the world from falling into darkness as well."
You sigh, closing the book and looking around. "Well mom, seems story times over," You stand with the book in your hand. Once up, you grab your teal floral backpack and slip the boom in before dropping the bag back onto the ground.
You reach down and pick the urn with your mother's ashes up. Leaning you forehead against the urn you breathe in a shaky breath "you know what that means huh?" You turn and look at the ocean. In your mother's will, she wanted half of her ashes to be dumped into the ocean on one of the islands of Hawaii. And the other half to stay with you. The only thing that stopped you from doing it so soon was the book. You wanted to read that story once more to her before letting her go.
"It's time for rest huh?" You place your hand on top of the urn and twist the lid, removing it. "Or yknow bed...We read the story all the way through." You sniff and blink the tears from your eyes. "I hope that, if he is real, maybe Maui can escort you across the ocean on your own adventures yea?"
You stand there a while longer before sighing and stepping to the guard rail preventing those who.get to close to the edge of the cliff from.
Biting your lip, you pray that your mother is watching over you. This would be one of the hardest things you have ever had to do
And you were alone.
You feel a breeze at your back. 'I have to do it now' you think tilting the urn just enough to empty out half.
You watch as the ashes scatter in the wind, falling into the water below.
"Goodbye mama." You whisper, tears falling down your cheeks.

Once the moment was over, you put the lid back onto the urn and place in back into your bag. "Time to go home," you say slinging the bag over your shoulder.
As you turn to leave, you almost bump into someone standing right behind you.
"Oh sorry didn't see you there," you stutter out surprised. 'Must have gotten to caught up in the moment.' you thought.
You couldn't see the probs face from beneath the hood and you started to feel awkward standing there. So you ask "Can I hel-,"
But just ask you finished asking the question, the stranger shoves you back and over the railing, promptly making you fall down and into the ocean screaming.

(And cliffhanger. Sorry! Comment and review! Peace dears!)
