Carl and Eva first met one day in the library when he struck up a conversation with her and a fellow housemate. The next day, Carl and Eva met again in the library. This time, however, Carl was in pain as a result of being attacked by a rival member of the Slytherin Quidditch team. Concerned even though she had only just met Carl, Eva convinced him he should see Madame Pomfrey and she accompanied him up to the hospital wing. She stood by for a while, but decided it would be more appropriate for her to wait in the library whilst the matron mended his injuries. Once healed, Carl returned to the library, where Eva was browsing a book about Animagi. Taking notice, Carl revealed to Eva that he was working on the skill himself, and showed her by transforming his hands to paws. Eva was impressed, and she revealed that she would love to try herself but she had always been a little nervous about it. Carl told Eva that his Animagus form was the same as his Patronus, a golden retriever dog. He then asked Eva if she could conjure a Patronus. Instead of just telling Carl about it, she brought him to an empty classroom by the library where she showed him hers, a cat. Carl showed Eva his as well.
From there, Carl invited Eva to accompany him to the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade for lunch. She shyly but happily agreed and the two set off. Things were going well enough until Eva tripped over a rogue root in the middle of the path. Crisis was averted, however, as Carl reached out and caught her. She’d fallen right into his arms. Eva was embarrassed, but Carl admitted that he found it cute. She was shocked, but even more shocked when he further revealed that he found /her/ to be cute, and pretty. She admitted that she thought he was handsome, and was surprised to find out that he’d never had a girlfriend before. She told him that she had never dated either, and much to her surprise, he offered to change that for her. She obliged, and it was then that Carl and Eva became a couple. They proceeded to the Three Broomsticks where they ordered lunch and talked, getting to know each other. When Carl told her his family lived in Canada, Eva extended him the offer of staying with her over the upcoming holidays because he had to go so far away. He agreed to ask his parents if that was okay. At one point in the conversation, Carl revealed he had been shot a few years ago after taking a bullet for his sister while at a shopping mall with his family. Touched by his bravery and shaken by the fact that he could have easily been killed, Eva boldly kissed Carl on the cheek. He then took the initiative and kissed her gently on the lips, the first kiss for both of them. Their lunch arrived and they ate.
Once they left the Three Broomsticks, it had begun to snow. Carl kindly offered Eva his scarf to keep her warm. The two of them returned to the library to write letters to their families, and Carl accidentally walked into the door on their way in and as a result, got a bloody nose. Eva offered to fix it up for him, and revealed that she had taught herself a few simple healing spells and was also interested in pursuing Healing as a career. Once their letters were written, Eva and Carl went over to the couch in front of the fireplace in the library, where Carl took a nap and Eva worked on some Arithmancy homework. When Carl woke up, they decided to stop at the owlery before dinner. Carl literally swept Eva off her feet when he decided to pick her up and carry her across the grounds and up to the top of the owlery at a sprint. She was impressed by his athletic ability, but they both agreed that he probably shouldn’t do it again as he was completely out of breath by the time they reached the top. They mailed off their letters, Carl’s with his own owl and Eva’s with one of the school’s barn owls. From there, the couple headed back to the school for dinner, where Eva joined Carl at the Gryffindor table. During dinner, Carl got an idea, and he told Eva as they left that he wanted to go practice his transformation. They went back to the empty classroom they were in earlier. Carl gave Eva a spellbook with the incantation to reverse the transformation, just in case something went wrong and he couldn’t transfigure himself back to human form. Carl began to focus and soon he started to slowly transform, bit by bit. He was doing so well, he tried to keep going, and to both his surprise and to Eva’s, he was able to make a full transformation into a golden retriever. Eva was beyond impressed and proud of him for such a difficult accomplishment, and it inspired her to want to learn how to transform as well. Carl remained a dog for a few moments, gallivanting around the room and chasing his tail a few times before changing back into his human form, sore and with a stomachache, but happy. Once he’d recovered, they decided to go for a walk outside since there was still some time left before curfew and they wanted to spend as much time together as possible. The snow had been falling thickly all afternoon and evening, so the grounds were silent and the snow was undisturbed. It was a beautiful scene, and they shared a wonderful and romantic kiss beneath the moonlight, surrounded by the falling snow. It was with reluctance that they went back inside, knowing it was almost time for curfew. The two bid each other goodnight and both went to bed feeling on top of the world after an amazing first day together.
