Trigger Warning: loneliness, lunch
Ding, ding, ding
The bell chimed, signifying the end of class. But while the other students sprinted out of the classroom, Tyler took as much time as possible. He knew everyone had a place to go, frens to hang out with, but he didn't.
He'd moved to Columbus a few months ago, but he still hadn't gotten used to the new city. When the school year started, he stuck to himself, trying to draw as little attention as possible.
It worked, since nobody noticed him enough to call him out. The main downside was that he was always alone, since nobody wanted to sit with the weird kid who never talked.
With a sigh, he forced himself out of the class and into the halls. Wading his way through the mobs of people, he went to his locker and pulled his lunch from the depths of his backpack.
After taking a moment to steel himself, he walked into the cafeteria and sat at his usual table. After scarfing down his small lunch, he pulled out his homework from math class, which was due in about thirty minutes.
With a sigh of relief, he stuffed the finished paper back into his binder. He was just about to sneak out to the bathroom when a boy with neon yellow hair and mocha eyes (and c-sharp lips and tiger growl teeth and ok I'll stop) sat down in front of him.
"Hey, is it okay if I sit here?" he asked nervously. "Nobody should have to sit alone."
Tyler blinked, surprised this stranger cared enough to make sure he had company. "Sure, I'm Tyler."
"Josh," he replied, the beginnings of a smile showing up on his face.
Tyler grinned back, the weight on his chest suddenly getting lighter. Suddenly the bell rang, ruining the moment.
"Oh, well guess I'll see you tomorrow, then. If that's okay, of course," Josh said, picking up his things.
"Yeah, I'm down," Tyler said. "Thanks."
They both awkwardly walked in the same direction, before Tyler inquired, "What's your next class?"
"Music, with Mr. Clarke, why?"
"Dude, that's my next class too!" beamed Tyler.
"Dude, that's sick! Why haven't I seen you?" Josh grinned back, happy he could be with his new fren longer.
"I try to stay out of the way. I play the trombone, you?" Tyler said.
"Trumpet," came the response.
When they had reached the music room, they went to their assigned seats, and through the power of plot holes, found that Josh sat right in front of Tyler.
"Meet up here after school? I have to pick up my instrument, but then we can go somewhere and talk," Josh said, turning to address him. "I-I mean, if you want to, of course. You're not obligated to do anything if you don't want to."
"Woah, dude, calm down. I'd love to spend more time with you!" Tyler responded, a smile growing over his face. "I know the best place to chill and eat Taco Bell."
Josh went to reply, but was cut off by the band director's entrance. "Please open to your new music, we're going to be learning measures 23-34 today."
Once their classes ended, the boys went to the band room to meet up. They ended up getting Taco Bell and talking for hours at the old treehouse Tyler found in the woods.
Over the course of a few weeks, they became inseparable, staying in the other's company for as long as possible.
They made it a tradition to go to Taco Bell every Friday and just talk about life, and it was on one of these Taco Bell days that Tyler asked Josh to be his boyfriend.
The tradition never died. Even after all the years and fights, Tyler or Josh would always turn up on Friday with tacos as an apology. It was also how Josh proposed, with a ring sitting on top of a cheesy gordita.
Obviously, he said yes, and the rest is history.
