I could hardly breathe as I ran the doorbell. This is my first job, I was excited but I didn't know anyone besides my older sister, Hana, if it wasn't for her I wouldn't even have this job. Working at a restaurant wasn't my first choice but after looking more into this place it didn't look too bad. The door swings open to reveal a short, blond haired girl. She welcomes me with a huge smile on her face and lets me in. it was nine in the morning so I don't really know why she was so happy.
"My name is Jacey" she says with a perky voice. I tell her my name and she goes back to work.  I walk in and see the stove and dish washing station, the door that I have to go in is the back door that leads to the kitchen. I get to the front and find a spot to sit and waited for someone to help me clock in and show me what to do.
After waiting for about 10 minutes an older lady with a hat on comes up to me. she didn't look as happy as that other girl that greeted me at the door. "Are you megan" she asked quickly. I nod my head not relying on my voice. She motions me to follow her. Banadir was a decent sized restaurant, not too big, but definitely not small.
"So you will be working with the salad bar to begin with, but in the mornings you need to put everything out and fill it"
she tells me rolling out a cart filled with yummy looking food. I nod my head and watch her as she puts the food out. Everything from salad to pudding. Since i was only 16 i couldn't touch the hot things yet, that's what her job was, working with the hot food, like the mash potatoes and mac and cheese. I was watching her closely, trying to memorize where everything went, but then from the corner of my eye i see someone vacuuming. He was very tall, and His hair was a dark brown to almost black. He was very mysterious, and as i was looking at him i saw that he started to look over in my direction. We made eye contact, embarrassed i Quickly went back to the lady who was still showing me what to do. After everything was set up she showed me to the back. everything from Where to find the food and how to prepare it so it was good to go out onto the salad bar. Soon enough she let me work by myself. " how's it going?" i see my sister pop her head around the corner to my work space. "It's easy. And pretty fun... thanks again for helping me get this job" i tell her with a smile on my face. Me and Hana are pretty close, Not as close as some sisters but we still do a lot together. She says a nice "Welcome" to me and gets back to work. After working for  hours my shift was finally over. Hana was done with her shift too so she brought me home.
"We are home mom!!" Hana yells to let our mom know that we are back from work. She comes running up to me. Her blond hair bouncing behind her. "How was it?? How was your first day at your first job?" I laughed at her excitement. It seemed that she was more excited then I was.  "It was good, I learned how to fill food, nothin hard" she smiled at my response and got back to what she was doing.
It has been a couple of weeks now, and i have gotten to know the job and the people more. I have become really good friends with a girl named Jessica,  And everyday that i am there i am starting to like it more and more. I now know the name of the guy that i saw the first day, his name is Derek. He is a senior at my school. I have only seen him in the hallways once or twice. With me only being a sophomore we don't really see each other during the day. I've tried a couple of times to go up to him and introduce myself but everytime i get even a little bit close i get nervous and chicken out.
The next day I had to work. So I got up early to get ready for work, i grab my clothes and head to the bathroom to do my hair and put a little makeup on. I look in the mirror so i can put my long hair up. As i was looking in the mirror i noticed that my hair was starting to get lighter, usually it's a sort of brown, but because it is summer the sun is making my hair became lighter. Being satisfied with my hair i start on my makeup, making sure to make my blue eyes stand out. Once i was done getting ready i hopped into my step-Dad's truck and we headed to Banadir.
Today is my longest shift yet.  6 hours, even though that might not seem long to many people, it's long to me because i've only been working at a restaurant for a two months. And some things are still confusing. i step out of my step-dad, Bryans, truck saying goodbye and headed up to the backdoor that i have to go through. I ring the doorbell and wait patiently for someone to open it for me. After waiting for only a couple of seconds the door opens to reveal Derek, instantly i could feel my face start to warm up. "Thank you" i say quietly, i could feel my face burning, turning into a tomatoey color. "You're welcome" he says with his deep handsome voice.
I walked past him, feeling his eyes burning into the back of my head. When i got to the front, out of his eye sight i could finally breathe again. I clocked in and started my shift. today is starting to get difficult. I couldn't get him out of my head. All i could think about was his deep brown eyes. And his smile. All my thoughts were about him. I had no idea why because i've only talked to him once, today.
"Your spilling the carrots" i hear a voice from behind me. I turned around to see Derek with a huge smile on his face.
"Oh sorry, i was spacing out for a second" i say laughing. He shakes his head and walks away. I start to clean the mess i made still thinking about him, i laugh to myself as i see how big it actually was, it was all over the counter and even on the floor. Throughout the day he would say little things to me. Teasing me about stupid things like I didn't clean a spot or something like that. As time went by we started talking more and laughing at each other.
Months later and me and Derek have become closer, we hangout all the time. I have almost forgot about my little crush i had, it's still there though. But for now he my friend and i couldn't ask for anything else.
"So what shall we do today ma lady" he says using his voice that he knows annoys me.
"Movie?" i suggest to him even though i already know the answer
"we always go to the movies. Let's go do something else. Maybe go for a walk? Just talk" i agreed with him, and we drove to munsinger gardens. We walked around for hours just talking about random things. Even though we didn't do much it was still a lot of fun, with him it's just easy. I can be myself around him. Somedays it's just great to have a friend like him, and i don't have to worry about being myself.
We walked around until it got dark out and he brought me home. Deep down inside of me i had wished that he kissed me, but i know that we are just friends, and that was never going to change, no matter how much i wanted to be more. we hugged and then he left. I walked inside and went to bed.
Tomorrow i have a date with Garrett. I met him in 7th grade, we didn't really talk much. He found me on facebook and we started to talk for a few days. The guy is nice but he's nothing like Derek. He sweet, but he tries too hard to be kind and nice. Sometimes it's too much, but despite all of that i decided to give him a chance because i know me and Derek will never be anything more then great friends.
I look at myself one more time in the mirror to make sure everything looked good before Garrett got here. I was wearing a light blue sundress that touched the floor ,with my brown flats. I curled my hair loosely so it would flow in the wind. I didn't put on much makeup but enough to make my eyes stand out. I could hear his car pulling up to the house so i grabbed my purse hugged my mom goodbye and walked out the door.
"Thank you for the daisies" i say smelling the flowers. I was happy about the flowers, but he didn't know that my favorite flower was a rose. But i was still happy that he got me flowers.
"Yeah, i knew you would like them. Every girl likes flowers, i don't know why. They are kind of ugly" i was shocked at his response. That wasnt really nice. I pushed his comment to the back of my head and got out of the car. The rest of the date didn't really go as i thought it would. He didn't open doors for me. He kept making rude comments like when he did about the flowers. And the worst part of the whole thing is that he burped during lunch, burped! Who does that on a date!? Anyways by the time he brought me home i had never been more happy to have a date over.
For a year i have been going on horrific dates, and by horrific i mean the worst dates you could ever imagine. One date, his name was connor, brought his grandmother along. And that's not even the bad part, he made me rub her feet! It was so bad. One guy was on the phone the whole time, he "accidentally" texted me saying that i was boring and that he was about to ditch. And more and more like that. But the good thing about all of that is that everytime i go on a bad date afterwards me and Derek meet up and talk about the date and laugh about the stupid things that the guy did.
Banadir is growing on me, i've been there for almost two years. I have learned a lot, everything from cooking food, to dealing with rude customers. My favorite part about work is working with Derek, he makes the rude customers seem not as bad. He always makes me laugh and the day go by way faster.
I was on another date. It wasn't bad, like a lot of my dates, but it still wasn't the best. He was nice and everything but we had nothing in common. He liked football, I liked singing. He was all about work and his future working in insurance, I wanted to travel the world and not worrying about working. During the whole date we barely talked. It was like going on a date with a wall. When he finally brought me home I was more then happy for it to be over. I waited for him to leave and I called Derek to come over. He agreed and told me he would be there in 10 minutes. I quickly ran upstairs and put my hair in a bun and waited for Derek to get here.
I heard him car pull up and I waited for him at the door. He barely got the door open before I ran up to him and hugged him, I was happy to see him. He's the only guy who actually talked to me, and we have so much in common. We sat down and started to talk.
"The date wasn't as bad, but we had nothing in common. I think I'm going to be done dating for a while. They all seem to end bad so why try right?" He nodded his head not smiling at me. We talked for a while more and it was time for him to leave. We said our goodbyes and he started to walk to the door. Before he he got to the door he turned around to face me, his expression looked almost mad.
"Why do you do this to yourself. You desire so much more. You always go on dates with guys who treat you like your garbage! You should date someone who would give you the world - someone who actually likes you for you- someone like me"
And before I could respond he crashed him lips onto mine. My stomach doing backflips. He pulled away, his eyes meeting mine.
"I like you, Megan, I have for a long time. And I think it's about time you be with someone who treated you good" he said smiling. I smiled at him not saying anything. At this moment no words were needed. I pulled him down to me again and kissed him. This moment was perfect and I wouldn't change it for the world
