I live in a town that people you know would respond to with a blank face. It's called New Ulm. Cue the blank face. I'd be surprised if you actually have heard of New Ulm, so I applaud you if you do. It's basically a town with limited people, and to get a nice sandwich you have to drive thirty minutes to a city. So, naturally you know everyone, everyone knows you, and we don't get new residents.
Well, until Gray Anderson came to town, making the population officially one person more. I was as interested as anyone for his arrival to Bernan High School. The only high school that all the teens go to, of course, is going to be the one he is attending.
When I heard that a new boy was coming in town, I was expecting a total rule breaker bad boy. Hey, don't judge me, he was from New York City, and I'm from New Ulm, what should I of expected?
"I'm so psyched about this new boy," Kyler whispered excitedly to me as we walked through the small, yet menacing, hallways of high school. "I wonder if he'll be a nerd, a jock, a batboy?" I gave my friend a small smile to humor her. Kyler had a habit of over thinking things yet always doing the wrong thing. The only thing that made her stand out to everyone else was her beauty. She had platinum blonde hair, crystal blue eyes, thin but not flat chested, and she was a cheerleader. A little cliché? Yeah, I know.
But then there's me, her best friend. I was nowhere near a cliché cheerleader. IN fact, I was quite the opposite. I was not stick thin, but I wasn't obese either, like I used to be. When I say obese I don't mean those sixteen-year-old girls saying they're fat when they are 100 lb., I mean I was literally 267 pounds. That was until I started getting tired of the teasing and the name-calling and developed something called anorexia. I went from obese, to medium in less than a year. It wasn't fun, and I was slowly but steadily getting over it. My vibrant red hair slightly made up for my bland personality. My eyes are poop brown, and I don't mean those of you that have warm, chocoately brown eyes. My eyes are so brown that they are almost black. Freckles dot all over my face, arms, hands, and knees. Yeah, knees. Weird, I know.
My personality was a whole other story. I made people feel uncomfortable by my glares, and my dark eyeliner, which usually people the impression that I was under depression. Ah, stereotypes, gotta love 'em. But I was not under depression, and I think it's terrible for someone to assume that. I, in fact, was trying rebellion. Ah but you notice the word 'trying'. My parents couldn't care less what I did or what I dressed like. I could walk out of the house naked and they wouldn't even notice.
"Piper? Piper Moon, are you even listening to me?" I turned sheepishly to Kyler, who now had her hand on her hip and was looking at me like she wanted to throw rotten vegetables at me.
"Oops," I muttered with a small apologetic smile, but she wasn't buying it.
"I can't stand it when you zone out like that. It's like talking to a damn zombie or something!" But her smile was back, so I knew she had forgiven me. We made our way down the empty halls, a bonus for getting to school early, and I waved her goodbye as I entered my homeroom, English, and she went into hers, Mathematics.
When I twisted the bronze doorknob, I wasn't expecting many people, for most people just stayed in the cafeteria anyways. What I was definitely not expecting was a mob of people surrounding someone in particular.
The me boy, Gray Anderson. He turned to the door and I got a good look of this good looking guy. His hair was a dark mahogany brown, and his eyes explained his name. There was a ring of dark gray around his pupil and surrounding his outer eye. Then there was a mix of light gray and green in the center around his pupil. His lips pulled up into a smirk when he saw me, and I couldn't help but blush. Curse this stranger and his ways to make a girl feel as if she could melt.
