Chapter 1:

"Can we all just agree not to kill that bitch?" I laugh as Cassy insults Molly, a rude girl that is in our faction history class. "Adrian, how are we going to bear leaving each other in a week?" I really wish she didn't bring that up. It is April 1st, which means in one week all 16 year olds in each faction will meet in the chosen faction to determine which faction they will go to. "Yea, let's just hope we end up with the same faction during our test," I tell her with a smile that means nothing to me but probably something to her. Our tests occur the day before the choosing ceremony, and those tests will apparently end with us knowing which faction we are meant for. "I'm going to go home, i'll see you at school tomorrow!" I watch her as she walks off, and I begin to wonder which faction I will choose. Will I stay here in Amity? Or will I be moving into another faction? My mother has always told me that I will never be Amity, which always concludes with a sarcastic comment about me being the only one who calls her mom instead of mother and how I'm such a rebel. Even my little sister, Bea, calls her mother and questions me whenever I don't. Which, by the way, I find truly annoying. "Why aren't you like every other Amity boy?" "What do you mean," I ask her in a mocking voice. "You are the only one who doesn't call your mother, mother!" Like I said, I'm such a rebel.

Chapter 2:

Why are we standing in this stupid greenhouse JUST to go to a dumb test, I think while I chew on my nails. Cassy is already taking her test while I'm still standing here waiting for it. Finally, after a long period of time, I am called for my test. "Carmen, David, Adrian and Leena" Calls out Eric, our test supervisor. I walk nervously into the building next to the greenhouse that is shaped like a dome. Once we stop walking, I stand in front of a large metallic door where the test occurs. Within minutes, I am laying on this hard chair while this man (Constantine, I think he introduced himself as that) gives me a light blue drink. "Just drink it, dude." He says right after I question the purpose of the liquid. I drink it and I begin to feel numb. I want to laugh because it makes my skin feel weird, but I can't because I have already fell asleep.
