Another Day in Compton

I lived like any other black boy out on the street. I played with the children I could see and avoided the less friendly ones.

Today was like any other day on the streets of Compton. I went to my friend Nico's to play him in a few games on the Playstation 2.

We were playing mortal kombat when his mom came and greeted me kindly and turned to Nico and said very harshly.

"Get off your ass you lazy jackass and go play outside. Put the fuckin game down now!"

Nico looked at me and sighed and I looked back at him with compassion. My mother wasn't as bad but she could be much worse so I knew how he felt.

When we went outside we went for a walk with our football to go down to the field and throw the ball for a bit.

"Dude I wish my mom wasn't so mean to me you know?" Nico said stopping at the intersection to cross the street for the field.

"I know what you mean bro but you gotta hang in there. Your mom may be mean but she's just trying to make you strong. You and I both know it's not safe in the jungle." I reply.

I say jungle because there never was a more perfect word to describe Compton. It's full of danger. Lions and tigers and snakes lie in wait at every turn here in the form of drug dealers, police, and king pins.

We get to the field and begin to throw the ball." Easy for you to say because she's always nice to you." He says throwing me the ball.

"Dude that ain't fair you know how my mom treats you compared to me." I respond throwing the ball.

"Yeah your right your mom is psychotic when she thinks she's being disrespected." Hr says with a smirk and throws the ball back to me. It's a high ball and while I'm looking up at backing up to catch it....*BAM*

I was tackled by Nico and he's standing up and making crowd sounds with his breath. "Yet again another tackle for Nico Freeman! The crowd goes wild! Nico! Nico! Nic-"

I didn't let him get away with taking me by surprise. I happily returned the favor.

"Oh but his victory is short lived as Jaxon comes back on the tackle with a vengeance. Oh man Nico looks hurt! Was Jaxon's tackle to rough for him to handle?" I say as he seems winded by my surprise attack.

I offer him my hand and he takes it and I help him up smiling. We both laugh and are about to go back to throwing the ball when...

*bang* *BAng* *BANG*

Gunfire.

All it took was one look from Nico and we both sprinted for my house...
