Hermione was standing behind a wall at the top of the stairs. Tonight was the Yule Ball. Hogwarts hadn't hosted the ball in centuries, making tonight a big night. She would be accompanied by Viktor Krum; one of the four champions that had been chosen for the Triwizard Tournament. He had asked her one day while she was studying alone in the library. All though he was a good person, she couldn't deny that there was someone else that she would rather be going with.
She was so nervous about entering the Great Hall. She had spent the last few hours taming her hair and getting ready. She almost looked unrecognizable. Hermione's mother had sent her a beautiful periwinkle blue gown with matching shoes. She had managed to smooth out her locks of bushy hair, using some very powerful wizard gel, and tied it back in an elegant knot.
Hermione took a deep breath and stepped out from her hiding spot, making her way down the stairs. She was desperate to find Viktor before she became to noticed but it was already too late. It seemed like everyone in the room was looking at her. And then she saw him. Not Viktor. Not even Harry or Ron. It was the Malfoy boy.
Hermione felt her heartbeat speed up when she saw him. She had never been able to explain how she felt about him. She knew that something had changed that day in third year when he apologized for making fun of Hagrid. Since that day, he had been kind to her. Not noticeably kind, but kind. He started looking at her a different way. When they passed each other in the halls, he had looked at her in a way that suggested something of longing. Like she was something that he desperately wanted but he knew he couldn't have. She couldn't help but hope that that's what he was thinking. If it was what he thought; she thought the same thing.
His eyes caught hers and time stopped. He looked at her like she was a goddess descending on Earth. Like she was everything that made the world good. Everything that made his world good. He had never looked at her that way before. He was all of a sudden regretting the past few weeks. He regretted not asking her to the ball. He knew how he felt about her. He had known for almost a year. He liked her. He more than liked her.
He loved her.
