As Odessa began to gain consciousness again, she sighed knowing that no matter how she felt, Angelica was still her love and she had to support her. She had no idea how long she slept in, but she knew it was somewhere around noon. She stumbled and grabbed the counter to hoist herself up without falling. She bent over her sink and threw up. Odessa cringed tasting nothing but stomach acid and alcohol and rinsed her mouth. She walked to the bathroom looking in the mirror staring herself down. She glared at her reflection before shrugging not trying to dwell on her self esteem any longer than she had to. She looked outside and then to the clock on her wall. Her heart began to beat heavily, the events of yesterday catching up to her.
"You can get through this," Odessa said to herself attempting to gain some sort of confidence about today.
She walked into her room not feeling like wearing a dress at all. She went through her clothes knowing she had some black breaches somewhere. She had snagged them from one of the boys who worked uptown because he more than enough pairs to count so she figured one gone missing shouldn't hurt. After she found them, she laid that out with a white satin shirt she had lying around somewhere. She got into a hot bath trying to relax herself before the reception tonight. Her mind drifted to memories of Angelica and herself.
"Odessa! I've missed you today! How was the library? Did you find any new books?" Angelica shot at her.
Odessa giggled before replying," Only your favorites." She held up a couple of books and handed them to Angelica. Angelica pulled Odessa and gave her a warm embrace and smiled to herself trying contain her excitement.
Today the town festival started. They called it 'The Shining' because it was the the week out of every month where beautiful music would flow through the city, people danced, cheered, drank and most would even sing there.
Odessa grabbed Angelica's hand before saying,"Let's head down to the city. The Shining has already started!"
Angelica rushed off to go put on a gown for her dress felt too big and too heavy to wear knowing she'd be out all night. Odessa grabbed Angelica's hand after she finished dressing herself.
"But wait my shoes!" Angelica said as both of the girls rushed into town. Odessa smiled and shook her head.
"We don't need them," Odessa stated as they arrived to the festival.
It had already started to get dark and the girls both grabbed a drink. Everyone was too drunk to care that they arrived barefoot and half-dressed. Odessa smiled down at Angelica watching the messy, curly haired girl raise her glass.
"RAISE A GLASS TO FREEDOM!" She yelled. There were cheers from many men and even some women as people began to down their drinks. On very rare occasion Angelica let loose like this and Odessa lived for those moments.
Shortly after Odessa and Angelica finished their drinks a man by the name of Lafayette walked up to them. He turned to Angelica.
"Ze stars shine bright for you, yes?" He attempted to swoon her. Angelica gave a hearty laugh along with Odessa.
"She shines brighter than any star out there Laf, try again next time," Odessa said over the crowd and laughing while pulling Angelica into her. Lafayette laughed and raised his drink before walking off to his friends. Angelica smiled to herself and leaned into Odessa's touch.
Odessa couldn't help but let the tears run down her face again. She attempted to wipe them away, but soon enough her entire body was shaking with sobs. She wailed out in pain.
"But we were so in love," She cried out. She was hoping someone could save her-anyone for that matter. Odessa eventually got sick of crying and washed herself up before getting out of the tub and getting dressed. She slid the soft shirt on before tucking them into her pants. She pulled the suspenders attached to them up and buttoned the many buttons before blowing out the candles in her room and grabbing a coat for the rest of the night.
She walked quietly through the town before arriving to the reception. She let herself in hearing the loud music and chattering of the people among her. She received a few whistles and a few glares from men and women on her appearance tonight. She wasn't here for any of them. She was here for Angelica.
Odessa stopped in her tracks while her eyes scanned the crowds to find Angelica. She was on the dance floor with Renleigh, but Odessa paid no mind to that. Odessa's jaw dropped in awe seeing Angelica in a white gown that trailed behind her and a loving smile on her face. Odessa walked through the crowd pushing people out of her way, her eyes only focused on Angelica.
"May I intervene?" Odessa asked politely holding her hand out for Angelica to take. Renleigh smiled and nodded oblivious to the love in Odessa's eyes.
"You know," Angelica started softly while gliding across the floor with her "Your parents would've loved this."
Odessa smiled and her heart ached for her late parents.
"I know my mom would've. Angie, she would've enjoyed the magic of it all. My dad would've enjoyed getting drunk with those fine gentlemen over there," Odessa said with a laugh spinning them around to show Angelica what she was talking about. Angelica let out a loud laugh before covering her mouth to not attract attention. Odessa smiled at the sound leaving Angie's mouth.
The rest of the night was mostly spent in silence. Angelica returning to her new fiancé and leaving Odessa to think to herself. It wasn't long before Eliza came up to Odessa asking for favor.
"Could you sing a song for us please?" She begged looking at Odessa's displeased face. "We all know you have a beautiful voice and our main singer just got sick. I guess the drinks were a little strong tonight. Don't even do it for me, do it for Angie," Eliza continued to beg knowing that Odessa will say yes if she brought Angelica into it.
"Only for Angie," Odessa stated before following Eliza over to the main stage where she announced that Odessa was to be singing a song for the newly wed.
"Oh shit um okay," She said earning a couple of disapproving looks and laughs from around the room.
"A toast to the bride!" Odessa started off with a smile looking at Angelica lovingly "To the bride!" She sung again a couple of chuckles were heard from around the room.
"From your best friend, who is always by your side. To your Union!" She sung.
"TO THE REVOLUTION," Alex, John, Mulligan, Laf, and couple more men said right after that. A laugh bubbled from her throat as she continued the song.
"May you always be satisfied."
Odessa sung with every bit of feeling she had for Angelica. Every gut-wrenching, heart-twisting, butterfly stomach filling, feeling that she had ever experienced since meeting Angelica. As Odessa sung she could only imagine what a life would be like with Angelica. Tears started building up and she soon started crying, but kept her voice strong. The crowd was dead silent and tears were gathering in the eyes of those who've gone through what Odessa is going through. Eliza cried for Odessa knowing that she was in love with her sister.
"She will never be satisfied. I will never be satisfied," Odessa sung, her voice becoming quieter as she finished off the song. She was applauded and she heard lots of cheers from dear friends of hers. Odessa's eyes were wet and red. She felt arms wrap around her and she stiffened seeing that it was not Angelica, it was Renleigh. Odessa coughed a bit before patting the girl's back.
"THAT WAS SO GOOD YOU SHOULD SING AT THE WEDDING," Renleigh said loudly pulling away to look at Odessa. Odessa simply thanked her and nodded before walking over to Angelica and hugging her tightly.
"Congratulations."
