I felt the warmth of the squishy sand sink in between my toes. The cool ocean breeze grazed my face as I listened to the calming calls of the flocks of seagulls flying freely. I twirled my hair in my fingers, studying its soft glow. The soothing scene of the sea filled me with peace as I watched the sky setting in warm colors. I looked down slightly. The beach brought me peace, but somehow the ocean did not. The way the sun's gleam hits the water, reflecting the sunlight and blocking what was inside of its massive hold; The way it exists so endlessly. it was majestic, yet it still filled me with fear. I leaned back, relying on the support of my arms. I realized the ocean's bleakness couldn't touch me from here and I closed my eyes, allowing my ears to fill with the music of the waves crashing on the shore. My breathing gradually slowed steadily as I savored the sense of safety.

...but it didn't last long.

Across the vast ocean, I heard the plummeting of large objects. The splashes of the salty water were fatal. Soon the sound of the aquatic surface was replaced by solid ground. The large objects were accompanied by a long whistle before shaking the ground on impact. My eyes remained closed, but the sweet breezy air quickly became the thick grog of ash and dust. A rush of panic jolted within me and I stood up, wanting to escape. Then it hit me.

..Where's Max?

My eyes flew open and I realized the softness of the sand was merely the worn covers of my bed. My eyes shot across the room but Max was no where in sight. I sat up in my bed deafened by the deathly ring that flooded my ears. The entire house shook once again but all I could hear was a muffled boom and the vibration of our home. I looked at the floor, and there beside me was Max huddled in a blanket taking cover. I screamed "MAX!!" And watched as his wet face shot up in my direction, his eyes still welled with tears. He ran up and sobbed into my chest, and felt him hiccup muffled words.

"MAX! I CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING. PLEASE NOD IF YOU'RE O-"

Another rupture from the bombs shook the house. His hand dived in for mine, and we ran out of the room into the kitchen. He grabbed a bag from one of the worn out brown cabinets and slung it over his shoulder. His body was trembling as he spun around, reaching for the knife drawer. I stopped him, spinning him back around and wiping the tears from his face. "It's going to be okay, alright?"
I didn't know if he could hear me or if he was as deaf as I was, but yet he nodded and faked a smile. I wrapped my thin arms around his shoulders and he handed me a second bag and tossed me a jacket and a bandana. With that, my little brother grabbed my hand and we fled our home.
