Ch 1: Their Story Begins

Prologue:
-10 years ago-
Taemins POV-
I ran from my room to meet up with him. It was dark and cold, but I didn't care, I had to see him. I approached him.
He turned to look at me and smiled. It was Minho my best friend. He was 9 and I was 7, and I wasn't supposed to be his friend. It wasn't because of our age, it was because he was the son of a peasant and I was a prince. His father was one of our many staff so he was always at the palace. My Nuna had once seen me playing with him and I had gotten reprimanded for it. From then on I had learned to be careful and to only play with him after nuna was asleep. I carried a bag of food with me and he came closer. "Taeminie, I have told you many times to not come out here at such hours, it's not safe" he said. I shook my head, "Minho you're my only friend and I feel sad when I'm not around you" and I held the bag up to him "I brought you some food" I said. He looked away with a sad look "Taemin you don't have to feed me, I get fed enough during the day" Minho said. He was a liar. I saw how little he was fed, and you could tell when you saw how skinny he was. "I know but as the prince I want to spoil my best friend" I said trying to lighten up the mood. He turned to me and his frown slightly turned into a smile. If that was all I could get I would take it. We sat under a tree in the garden that had a big trunk so we wouldn't be seen by palace guards. I opened the bag and laid out a napkin so I could show him all the cookies and fruit I'd brought. His eyes lit up when he saw the piece of chocolate I had brought him. He ate it slowly as he savoured each bite, this made me sad. I had a life filled with candy and treats and all he got was stale bread, jam and a glass of water. That was his meal daily, three times a day.  As I was eating an apple he suddenly asked me "why are we friends?". It hit me off guard. I could see the pain in his eyes as he asked me. "Minho, we're friends because we grew up together, and because you're the only one that sees me for who I really am" I said to him. "Taemin I don't think we can see each other anymore, I'm sorry" he said and he got up. I grabbed his hand "Minho, why are you saying this, we have to stay friends!" I begged. "Taemin I hate you, you're so rich and you think everything is so easy, but it's not, you'll see that one day" he said and snatched his hand out of mine, shook his head, and walked away. I walked after him but I knew if the guards saw me I'd be in so much trouble. When he was near the guards, he began talking to them and they laughed. He was friends with them? Tears were starting to fall from my eyes and I ran, I ran to the fence that blocked the castle from the outside world. If Minho wasn't going to be my friend, then I would run away. The palace was my prison and the only time it felt otherwise was when I was Minho. He said he hated me. I had lost him, so my parents would lose me. It was their fault he hated me, if they hadn't treated him like a peasant, if they'd had let him be my friend, I would be happy and safe. I wouldn't be running away from this prison. I climbed the fence, I did it easily since me and Minho had done this many times. I got to the top and looked back at the palace. With tears steaming down my face, I grab the rope Minho placed there and I climb down. I run into the forest, as far away as I can before my body begins to feel tired. I'm only 7, I need to sit down and sleep for the night. When I think I'm far in enough I find a tree and I sleep under it. I need to get energy so I can continue running away.

Minho's POV-
Flashback
"Minho, please come here" I turned around. It was Taemins Nuna. I walked towards her and said "yes mam, what do you need?". "Minho, I thought I had told you and Taemin enough times that you could not befriend each other, but did you listen to me?" She said with an evil glare, "mam I don't" she cut me off before I could explain myself. "You either leave Taemin alone or your parents will lose their job at the castle, they make a good pay compared to what they would earn in the city" she said looking like the spawn of the devil. Tears were forming at my eyes and I nodded. She smiled and said "goodboy minho" and she walked away.
End of flashback
I was talking to the guards, I needed to pretend like I didn't want to be his friend anymore. Taemin was important to me, but how could I be the reason for my parents losing their job. I waved goodbye to the guards, then I heard screaming. It was the queen.

All the guards rushed to where the scream came from and I followed. Then I saw her, the queen, a panicked look was on her face as she cried "find him! Find my baby Taemin! The prince, he's not in his room!" She screamed. All of the guards were looking all over the palace and that's when it hit me. He left because of me. I had to find him. Where could he be? And then I remembered, we were always hanging out in the forest and once taeminie even told me he'd rather live there with me than in the palace. I ran to the fence and climbed over it as quickly as my feet would let me. I ran Into the forest screaming his name "taeminah!" Over and over again. That's when I heard a shriek, it was him. "Taemin!" I screamed and I found him. There was a wolf approaching him and he wanted to eat the boy. I grabbed my pocketknife and I launched myself at the wolf, impaling his back. I pushed the knife in as far as it would go and the wolf fought back. He then gave up and laid in the floor injured. "Taemin we have to go!" I said and grabbed his hand. We ran towards the castle and when we got far from the wolf, then Taemins foot got stuck somewhere and he fell "ouch" he said falling onto the ground. Since his hand was latched to mine I fell with him. "Are you ok?, do you think you can walk?" I asked him. He shook his head sadly. "I'll have to carry you" I said and I turned around for him to get on my back. "No minho I am staying here, I don't want to go back to that prison. I have nothing there, you were all I had and I lost you" he said crying. "Taemin I didn't mean what I said" i explained to him what Nuna has said and he looked shocked. "I'm sorry Minho" he said and he kissed my head. I picked him up with my arms and I carried him to the castle. "Promise me you'll never leave me again Minho" Taemin said. "I promise" I said and I carried him back to the castle. There were guards outside the fence. "He's here!" A guard yelled and someone went for the queen. She ran towards us and enveloped Taemin into her arms. "Taemin never scare us like that again" she said as she kissed all over his face. Taemin told her what I had done and she thanked me. "Minho, you and your parents will be rewarded, your parents will become nobles and you will be Taemins royal guard, of course after you're done with your training" she said and I smiled. I had made a promise to my best friend and this would be how I would keep it.
