Ava felt her lower lip quiver slightly and she worked to stiffen her lip. Seeing an ex girlfriend while out on a date is never a good thing. Especially when you just met the girl and you may or may not be quite over her. Lizbeth spotted her from across the room. Ava saw her flinch slightly and hoped that Lizbeth had the good sense not to approach. She quickly took notice of the new girl on Lizbeth's arm. She was noticeably taller than Lizbeth, at least 5'7". This meant she would tower over Ava's small frame of only 5'2". That made her think twice before approaching the two. She quickly averted her eyes, not before taking in the woman's flawless pale complection, long dark curly hair and curvy body.
Ava steered her date towards their table with a gentle hand on her lower back. It seemed such an intimate touch for some reason. Ava had met Kali, her date, at the coffee shop around the corner from her small studio apartment. Kali had been hinting like crazy that Ava should ask her out. It had been so long since Ava had asked anyone out, after all, she had been with Lizbeth for over 5 years. She gritted her teeth against the memory. Ava quickly excused herself from the table, claiming that she had to use the restroom.
The door closed swiftly behind Ava as she rushed to the sink. The cool water helped to drown out the thoughts in her mind and chill her heated face. She barely heard the door shut behind her as she lifted her head from the sink and grabbed a paper towel from beside her. She patted her face and tried to steady her breathing.
"Are you alright?" Ava heard a voice sound from just behind her. She quickly lowered the paper towel from her face and her pale green eyes met with a curious pair of hazel eyes. The woman had a slight smile lighting her small heart shaped faced. The woman's dark brown hair was tied into a knot at the back of her head, quite shoddily because tendrils fell around her face and accentuated the smooth lines of her face. Her features weren't stark by any means, they were simply compelling. Ava supposed it was her hazel eyes. Framed by perfectly full eyelashes that fell gently against her face as she blinked, seeming to be waiting for something.
"I'm fine." The girl rolled her eyes and Ava grimaced. "Really." The woman's smile faded, but the mirth in her eyes stayed as she approached the sink beside Ava. She ran a finger beneath her eyes, wiping away some unseeable trace of smudge and then promptly lifted herself onto the seat and sat facing Ava.
"So. We are both girls right? We have probably the same pet peeves and the same torrid love affair stories. Do you know what the difference is between you and I though?" The woman addressed Ava. "I don't sulk in a bathroom when I have a perfectly lovely date sitting in the restaurant waiting for my return. Quite anxiously, I might add." She smiled and promptly lifted herself from the sink once again, and placed a hand on Ava's shoulder before exiting the bathroom.
Ava stared after her. She had no idea who that woman was. She couldn't get her from her mind for the remainder of the date. Even when she gave her date a quick soft kiss on the cheek she could not stop pondering the absurdity of a woman acting so freely when they had only just met, and not even exchanged pleasantries. It wasn't until she arrived home that she noticed she had not thought of her ex since she had spotted her across the room. She chuckled to herself as she slipped out of her dress shoes and into an old t-shirt that fell just above her knee.
Ava walked to her answering machine, an old contraption that she still used despite her cell phone in her pocket. The machine blinked red. She sighed, assuming it was her mother, undoubtedly to ask about her date and what she wore to it. Ever since she had told her mother that she was a lesbian she was convinced that Ava should marry straight away in order to ensure that she have children. Ava tried to explain that she was only 27 and had plenty of time for all that, and her mother would respond, quite annoyingly, "Your biological clock is ticking dear". She loved her mother but she could drive a woman insane.
