Lucy had the Nancy Drew novel hidden carefully under the kitchen bench. Obviously no one could see the book under the bench, but her lime green eyes that carefully trailed word after word gave her secret away. Even if her adoptive mother, Anny, found out, Lucy wouldn't even be bothered. May be she wouldn't even notice Anny yelling at the top of her voice for her to eat her breakfast. The wannabe sleuth was being captivated and pulled into the pages, at that moment she was Nancy Drew on a wild Mystery.
"Lu, Lu, Lucy, " Angus, her brother ( the real son of her adoptive parents) called out. In his hands was a plate of freshly-fried bacon and eggs and in his other hand was a glass of OJ. Evidently, he was holding Lucy's meal. But Lucy didn't turn. He looked stunning in his ordinary blue polo T-shirt and an navy-type trousers.
"Look, look at the TV. Free Nancy Drew books for giveaway!" Angus exclaimed all of a sudden and pointed to the 42" flat screen in the lounge. Instantaneously, Lucy shut the book closed and directed her full attention to the TV screen. But to her dismay, she saw a guy swimming with cute Dolphins. Lucy thought it was a pleasant scene but that was aside of the point. Angus had pulled a fast one on her.
"Don't do that. You always do that same old trick," Lucy complained as she fluffed her dark green blouse. You could tell by the sound of her voice that she was irritated with Angus for interrupting her reading. "I was just at the climax of the book."
"Well, one; you always fall for that trick, Angus announced. Unfortunately Lucy had to accept and agree with what he said. "Two; it was the only way to get your attention and three; I'm sorry Sis, but Nancy Drew isn't going to bring you your breakfast." Angus smirked as he laid out his final point.
"Fine, you win this time." Lucy placed the book on the bench on the side and received her breakfast from Angus. Her face expressed absolute eagerness to eat as she gazed at her food. "This reminds me of a book I read titled Killed on an empty stomach," she recalled enthusiastically as she stiffed a bacon strip in her mouth. The way she said it was like the title didn't even bother or give her the creeps.
"Seriously? You read that book? Angus looked surprised. "You and those mystery books Lu." Her adoptive mother, Anny, walked in with another plate of bread. She immediately noticed the mystery novel lying visibly on top of the bench. "But be careful with what you read, some can be very horrific and violent," Anny instructed as she placed four pieces of bread each on the teenagers plates.
Lucy didn't reply. She was busy gobbling up all the food on her plate. She was caught up in the Nancy Drew novel that she never realised she was unusually hungry. Normally it would be Angus raiding the kitchen for left over pizzas, half eaten cakes or anything that is edible and that cured his hunger.
Soon later, Anny entered the kitchen looking presentable. Both Angus and Lucy found this quite hard to believe given the fact that their mom was a stay-at-home-parent. "She must be going somewhere," Lucy thought as she drank up the remaining OJ left in her glass.
"We better get going now. I have to drop you guys off because I have a mandatory appointment at a quarter past eight." Anny was now fitting on one of her not-always-worn flats. The black flats simply complemented her simple but stylish, white top and the rest of her attire."You're going on a job interview?" Lucy questioned her mother as she places her plate and glass into the sink. She walked back over to the bench and got her back pact then joined her brother and mother at the doorway.
Anny just smiled and hurriedly ushered the teenagers out. She grabbed the wooden door handle and shut the door behind her. She later met them at the car. Anny later met the teenagers at the car.
