Stepping back in that apartment where she had left her heart was the most nerve wrecking experience of her life. She knew she had nothing to worry about, Kyle had promised he'd wait and she knew he would open his arms to her as soon as he saw her.
"He'll be here in a minute." Said the girl who had opened the door, Mare had never seen her, she was probably one of Elle's friends. "I should go now."
As weird as it seemed to Mare how the girl went out, her head down and in such a rush, she didn't pay much attention to her. All she wanted was to see Kyle.
It had been such a long time, her tour had taken her longer than what she had expected. Being back in London, seeing the gray sky, feeling the cold breeze, walking down the empty street leading to her building, that was the feeling of being home. She walked around the living room for a minute while waiting for Kyle to come meet her. The apartment was just how she remembered it, big and spacious, not much furniture in it, just the necessary and stylish couches and the big TV with the consoles and videogames. It smelt like him, Elle was never home so that was only natural, and so she took a deep breath and got even more impatient, she wanted to hug him, to kiss him, to feel his arms around her.
"Mare!" Her heart skipped a beat when she heard his voice calling her name. She turned around and there he was, coming towards her, frowning and smiling at the same time. "When did you get here?"
"Just five minutes ago!" She said with a little too much excitement.
"Not the apartment here, silly, I mean London."
She found it weird that once he reached the living room he went straight to the couch and gestured for her to seat as well, though after their last meeting, she wouldn't blame him for being cautious.
"I came straight from the airport here, I haven't even been at my apartment."
"So like you," he shook his head and a laugh escaped his lips. "You can't let a business without resolve."
"I wouldn't call this a business, but you're right, I needed to see you as soon as I got here."
"When Taylor told me you were here I have to admit, I was caught off guard." He rubbed the back of his neck, a shy smile in his lips and his eyes could not meet hers. So cute, she thought.
She took a deep breath and prepared herself to let her heart take hold of the situation. "Kyle I know it took me a bit longer than what we thought, but I'm finally here and I..."
When she stopped talking he turned his eyes to her. It always amazed her how someone could be this handsome, his blue green eyes, his almost perfect smile, with that crooked tooth that just graced his mouth even more, his brown hair, everything about him was perfect for her.
"Listen Mare, I want to apologize for the last time, I know I was..."
"Oh no, Kyle, it was all my fault!" She rushed to say. "It was me who asked for a break, and I understand that it hurt you a lot, I'm the one apologizing."
"Don't. I couldn't see it then, but I now know it was for the best, it was necessary."
She smiled, weren't they perfect for each other? It was like he could read her mind. "It was for the best, indeed."
They were both silent for a whole minute in which there was a tension that had never settled between the two of them, this wasn't like Kyle and Mare, and still she couldn't see there was something wrong.
"Come on, Mare!" He said laughing nervously. "Don't be a stranger!"
"I'm not!" She laughed it off and tried to relax. "In any case, you are right, we were six months apart and though that's a long time, it helped me think things through."
