This morning, I woke up to learn that Donald Trump had won the presidency he had been so desperately clamoring for. I turned to my girlfriend for support. As a queer trans man, I reacted with fear, but my fear was met with her happiness. My girlfriend is a bisexual woman, so you may assume that the results of the election would cause her distress. I did. I was wrong. She told me that she supports Donald Trump and, admittedly, I may have overreacted. I combatted her beliefs with anger and shouting, earning me a trip to my assistant principal's office. This man took time out of my day to tell me why he was pro-life and therefore pro-Trump. "I have a sister who is transgender and I'm not against trans people," he said. "I just support Trump because he won't let people murder babies, whether they were conceived consensually or not." I was told that I needed to be more respectful and understand that my girlfriend, like him, wasn't against me; she only supports Donald Trump. It was also brought to my attention that nobody would let Trump actually hurt my community or the communities of other minorities in danger. However, this wasn't why I was so angry. I am not afraid that he will destroy our strides towards equality; I know he can't. I was only so furious because I know that he represents bigotry and ignorance.
"How can you give someone who has threatened people you know personally the privilege of running your country?" I asked this as if I wanted to know the answer.
At the time that I am writing this, there have been 8 confirmed attempted suicides among transgender youth in America due to last night's election. Only 1 has survived and is currently on life support. To fellow members of the LGBT community, I am sorry. You have lost too many fighters.
To supporters of Donald Trump, however, I hope you're happy. Do not call on me or my people when things do not go your way. We will not fight for you.
P.S.: My girlfriend no longer supports Donald Trump. Don't hate on her. I merely used her as an example and she's not a bad person by any means.
P.P.S.: The previously mentioned girlfriend and I have since broken up, but there are no hard feelings.
