CHAPTER FIVE: LUCKY STRIKE
I couldn't speak. What should I say? My heart was dying to say yes, but my mind was saying no. Harry was a great guy and everything I experienced with him so far had been great. Somehow my mind was trying to protect me. My mind wants to protect me from the potential heart-break, but my heart would break if I said no. He had grown on me, although we had only met a few times. It freaked me out, getting attached to someone that quickly.
Decisions, Decisions
''Can I ask you something?'' The words formed on my lips easier than I thought they would. There was just one more thing I had to consider before I would say yes. That one thing would have to be clear to him and to me. I really liked Harry and I knew he liked me.
''Of- Of course. Anything.'' He spoke quickly, obviously nervous about what I had to say. If the roles were reversed, I would act the same, for sure. My palms were sweaty when the next words rolled out of my mouth.
''Can we take things slow?'' The smile on his face was making me starstruck. He looked like a little kid who was told he could visit Disneyland. He nodded and cupped my face, his touch giving me little shocks all over my body. His whole body language screamed happiness and to think that I was the one who was responsible for it, was amazing.
''Thank you.'' The way he spoke, told me he wasn't joking at all. Suddenly I realized something I wish I could forget, but I couldn't. I leaned towards his ear and reminded him of something he seemed to have forgotten.
''We should head back, your performance starts soon.'' I whispered. He looked at me and chuckled, not expecting those words. He let go of my face, but his fingers intertwined with mine. We slowly walked towards the car, my heels making loud noises on the pebbles. As soon as we reached the car, he let go of me to open the car. He opened the car door for me and I got in quickly. As he walked towards the other side of the car to get in, my body felt genuinely happy. I was satisfied with myself, and that was something I couldn't say very often.
He got in the car and he turned on the engine. As the time flashed on the dashboard, I realized we had been gone for a long time. Fortunately we had enough time to drive back to the stadium, otherwise we would have been screwed big time.
''Do you have to work during the concert?'' He asked me. I shook my head, I usually could relax during the shows.
''I do have to work after the show, cleaning up the stadium.'' It wasn't the best job in the world but I didn't have a choice. Thankfully we were with a big group so cleaning up wouldn't take that long. One time there were only five people and it took us hours to clean up.
''That's a shame.'' There was a short silence before he started to talk again. ''Can I ask you why you work for us? It's not that I don't like that, I do, but I wonder how you ended up here.''
''It's not a very fancy story, it's not that interesting.'' I told him right away. ''I always wanted to organize events. Since I couldn't afford to go to college and actually get a degree, I started to work here and there and try to get some experience with events. When I was on the edge of going bankrupt I saw an advertisement in the newspaper asking people to help with a tour backstage, with no further info. I decided to go for the job, because I needed it. Your management saved me from going bankrupt and I can't thank them enough for that.'' I smiled. ''I was lucky to find a job I was interested in and I am thankful that they hired me. They don't usually hire people with no degree. If you ask around, I'll be one of the few without.''
It was quiet for a moment. He was probably processing everything I had told him. ''That's an amazing story actually. I don't think there are many people here that can say that their job saved their life. Maybe you wouldn't have died if you had gone bankrupt, but you would have been in a very bad position. Is it hard to work here without a degree? Especially with all those people who do have a degree?''
