“You know, if you press your tongue down really hard as you bite it increases the blood flow.” Misty, my sort of foster sister piped helpfully with a mouthful of blood in her mouth, it spilled carelessly out of the corners of her lips. The more I watched it the more I became intoxicated and the more repulsed I became by myself.  I tried reminding myself that this was only animal blood.

Misty let her antelope fall limply to the forest floor.

“I hate feeding off of animals though. You sure are a party killer, Midnight.” She added with a small, impish grin, pulling her fiery red hair away from her face trying to avoid getting it in the blood; she may have been a messy eater but it didn’t stop her from keeping up with her own vanity.  Her bright red eyes watched me intensely, only making me thirst blood more.

Misty was soulless, and I didn’t mean that in a rude way, she truly lived life without a soul, in the most literal sense. She could kill as many humans as her thirst required her without even feeling the slightest tinge of guilt for taking a life. She was the way that most Vampire’s were, the way we were meant to be so that we could sustain life easily, not have to have a breakdown about killing someone every time we got thirsty.

Unfortunately I was always the one having the breakdowns.

Edge; my self-titled vampire mentor, who I usually referred to as my foster father had told me I was a ‘Cursoul’. It was a word he had put together to just mean a vampire who had been cursed with a soul; ‘cursed soul’.

You see, having a soul is a funny thing. To those who have them, they find it great, I was happy to still be in touch with humanity, to feel emotions. To at least try to be a normal human despite how far away that reality really was. But to those who don’t have souls, they absolutely love it. Because it’s obvious really; if you don’t have a soul then you are incapable of missing it.

I bent down wearily, pushing my face towards the antelope’s body, I let my fangs slowly slip through my gums and into my mouth before I could pierce the creature’s body and suck its warm, beautiful blood. Pressing down my tongue near the bite as Misty had instructed me I could feel more and more blood flowing into my mouth. It slid down my throat and wove itself around my thirst, containing it, and yet not fully satisfying it.

I let out a sigh of relief as I backed away from the body. No matter how much I hated this; drinking blood would always feel so good.

“Misty?” I stood back up and faced her. “Don’t you ever wonder what your life was like? How it would be to still be human?”

“Pfft. Why would I do that?” Misty laughed. “I was a dreary little goodie-two-shoes high-school student who never did the world any good.”

“But you probably enjoyed that.” I pointed out.

“Which is exactly why I deserved to die.” Misty giggled sadistically, turning away from me, wandering back towards the forests pathway. I followed closely behind her, unwilling to get lost.

“That’s a little harsh, don’t you think?”

“Why should I care?” her laugh was trilling.

Misty knew all about her past, she could think back on her years of living and see what she was missing out on, know who she was, be content with her life. It was the only thing I envied about her. The only thing that I could remember was anything past the day that edge had found me lying in the middle of the forest. Before that I had no idea, I could have done anything, and been anyone. I didn’t know what it was like to be a normal human kid, being a vampire was all I knew. I hated it. I wanted a chance to go out and explore the world, mix with the mortals and see if they were as bad as the vampires said they were.

It was sort of a bad idea, it meant I’d probably grow even more of a conscience towards these mortals. But I didn’t care. Getting out of this vampire routine was dawning on me like a new thirst, I wanted it, and I wanted it bad.

“Misty… I think I’m going to leave tonight.” I said quietly.

“To do what?” Misty asked in surprise.

I stopped walking and looked down at my feet.

“I want a chance to live me life. Y’know, create new memories. I want other memories other than being a monster. I hope you’ll all understand.”

“You’re crazy, Mid. But that’s what we like about you.” Misty shrugged and thought nothing more of the conversation. I didn’t know whether she doubted that I’d do it, or if she was merely a bored vampire listening to what seemed like silly mortal troubles.

But this was something I had to do for myself to really know what my life was all about.

What’s the worst that could happen? If I didn’t like what I found out in the world, I’d return to this life, forever under the cover of the beautiful shadows of night.
