~~~~~~~~Caleigh's P.O.V~~~~~~~
I look at her, my eyes wide with confusion. It was tight on the small bus in the afternoon heat. Finally, tomorrow was Thursday! My face was still flushed from laughing so much, but now I had stopped. "Starbucks? Audrey, you know my mom doesn't let me get coffee often!" I take out my phone, ready to ask, but still doubtful. "Besides, on such short notice, too!" My friend had dark brown wavy hair, like mine but a bit darker, and we had the same dark brown eyes. Though, I was way more pale and she was just way more tan.
Audrey had suggested that we should invite our friends to a writing club-meeting thing or whatever after school tomorrow at Starbucks. It was only a walk away and takes only about a few minutes to reach the famous coffee goodness. The plan was genius, of course it coming from Audrey, but every plan has a flaw. We all probably couldn't even make it!
"I know, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Right, Caleigh? Come on, it'll be fun!" Audrey beams proudly while I consider.
I finally murmur, "Couldn't hurt to ask." Already having my phone prepared so I don't have to reach out behind me to struggle my phone out, I text my mom.
"I'll ask the others! I'm sure-Well, no. I-Welp! I'm asking anyways, whether I'm sure or not! I mean, I'd be happy to go by myself, but even more happy to share a large sugary drink with my friends-WHILE doing something productive, wouldn't you?" Audrey explains. She lost me somewhere in there, but she caught my attention with the words, 'Large sugary drink'.
I giggle, "A large sugary drink, huh? Perhaps a churro frappe with extra chocolate sauce and candy bits?" I gaze off into the window, my mind set on the words-YUM.
"If that interests you... I mean, I'm probably gonna get something else anyways!"
"Is that so?"
"Yeah."
"Really, what could be more sugary? I mean, other than more than one of those things!"
"A drink that's more sugary, duh."
"Wha-Wait! That doesn't explain anything-Ugh, well, I bet I could get a more sugary drink than you!" I complain. My mom texts an 'ok' back to me, and I smile, nudging Audrey. I can go! Yes!
"Ha. So it's a bet?" Audrey smiles at me, and it was a challenging smile at that.
"Oh, it is on! Tell Larissa and Isabella! Now, they hafta come!" I say. I give Audrey my best competitive grin, but it breaks into laughter.
A buzzing vibration from Audrey's phone told me for sure that the girls had replied, and I was right. Both were able to make it, as we all were surprisingly! Audrey takes too long to type in the contest information, so I snatch her phone excitedly, despite her protesting shriek.
It was done in less than a few seconds, and the two girls soon replied a sure yes to our challenge.
Here ye-This is the SUGAR WAR!!
(I'll give you a second to sigh, roll your eyes, and face palm at my awesome craziness)
Audrey and I start laughing. "A sugar war?" She hesitates, thinking how she should respond to this weird name. After all, it IS a WEIRD contest! "Sounds like the best! I'm in!"
"Ugh, now I wish it was Friday!" I complain. I look just in time to see our bus round the corner before our stop through the window. Sadly, homework awaits me instead of an interesting fun-time gathering with friends tonight.
Audrey nods in agreement, following my gaze, "Same."
Suddenly, our bus comes to a halt, sending me face-first into the seat in front of me. I yelp, "Ow!" Then, I start laughing, "I should've learned my lesson by now! How many times does that really happen?!"
"Like one hundred sixety-four times." Audrey exclaims, smiling her usual smile now. It was friendly and bright, just like her.
I glare at her, actually quite amazed, "You COUNTED?!" I get up and follow her off the bus, while she was laughing. My face smiled, but I was still confused.
"Oh, no! I didn't count! Ha! Just a random number, Caleigh!" She is practically laughing hysterically now, and I join her.
"Oh!" I laugh some more before we have to stop to continue down the side walk to our house.
We reached Audrey's house first and I wave goodbye, "Can't wait for the meeting Friday!"
"Might wanna bring some supplies to write and make some creative ideas! It's not only a 'Sugar War', it's also our writing meeting!" Audrey reminds me, giggling at the silly name of our extra contest.
"Right! So excited!" I exclaim and start towards my house only a minute away.
Audrey nods and waves, disappearing into her house, shouting a final goodbye.
Though something told me that-No matter how cheesy this sounded in my head-That this wasn't the end, a goodbye. I felt like something big and new was going to start Friday!
I shook the weird feeling off and strode up to my house, smiling. Sugar War, huh?
