Erik watched the helicopter fly away with Charles and his wife. Charles was an enigma to him. The man had so many chances to stop him and never did. He could have insisted his wife kill him. She easily could have, even before he would make her swallow a landmine.
And the way he reacted to seeing her! He had never seen Charles cast dignity to the wind so easily and recklessly as he did when Jane was in his arms. He could only imagine the scene taking place in the helicopter now.
Erik watched Charles' helicopter join two others that were airborne. To his horror, a small tornado appeared and started to twist its way to the three helicopters. Riptide! Erik felt his stomach drop. He reached up, trying to use his power to steer the helicopter his friend was on. He tried to steer it away from the tornado but he found his concentration wasn't strong enough. The tornado picked up speed and hit the helicopter destroying the blades.
"NO!!" Erik cried out. "NO!!!"
The helicopter leaned to one side. Erik tried to steady it, lowering it to the ground, but it exploded. Erik tried to reduce the impact as the helicopter crashed to the ground but it was too late.
Erik fell to his knees. He failed. He failed to save Charles.
Mystique found Erik kneeling on the ground, wailing. A feeling of dread washed over her. "Erik, was that?"
"CHARLES! NO!!" he screamed. She saw a look ofunbridled rage cross his face. She felt her entire world stop. My brother was on there, she realized.Erik scampered to his feet and took off in the jungle to the wreck site. Mystiquetrailed after him. She knew whoever reached Riptide first would kill him, andshe was determined to be the one to do it.
