Dear dad,
It’s been three years since I’ve last talked to you. How have you been? I really miss you…I know you didn’t do it. It’s impossible to think you could. I know everyone thinks you are the most horrible person in the planet but I just want you to know..I think you’re the most amazing dad ever. You were brave enough to take the bullet for a crime you didn’t do. That to me is the most amazing thing in the world. You’re a good man. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But I hope you know.. I love you.
Sincerely,
Harmony
A tear slid down Harmony’s rosy cheek and on to the floorboards as she folded up her letter. With a lick of the envelope she sealed the note inside . That had been the first time ever that she had written to her father after three years. With her mother being dead she has had to resolve with foster parents throughout these past years.
She put the letter down and picked up her blonde wavy hair into a ponytail and changed from her sweat pants into white shorts and a plain yellow tank top.
This is it.. she thought. She picked up the letter once again and dashed for the door.
“I’ll be back before dinner!” she called out to her foster mom, Ariel.
“ Okay sweetie. See you then! “ Ariel replied and she was gone.
The sounds of children laughing with their friends and birds chirping happily filled the surroundings around her.She honestly couldn’t believe how a foster kid like her, was living the “good” life.
Ariel and her husband, Nick, were millionaires. Nick was the CEO of a major record label for a good 15 years but then won the lottery and quit. They live in a good neighborhood and their house is by far the biggest of it.
Nick and Ariel wanted to enter her in private school but Harmony denied. She didn’t want to feel so out of place. Fortunately they understood completely and put her into public school. She is extremely grateful to be with them for now but she still wishes to be with her dad.
Suddenly, Harmony stood in front of her destination. She took in a deep breath and pried open the door.
The cool air hit Harmony as she entered police station with anxiety. She looked around until she found a dark skinned man who was dressed in a police uniform. She walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder.
He turned around letting Harmony see his sheriff badge and asked “Hi, how may I help you?”
Harmony held up the letter and stuttered as she replied. “ Hi…Carl. I wanted to give this to my dad, Andrew Carter. Do you know him?”
He lifted his eyebrows. “ How could I not. He killed Rachel Smith. ”
“ He isn’t a killer.” Harmony said, her teeth grinding against each other.
“ Yeah, sure… whatever you say.” He answered in a mocking tone.
Carl took the envelope anyways and ripped it open.
“It’s for safety matters that I open it…you never know.” Harmony nodded. He tucked the letter under a folder on his desk and said “We will make sure to give it to him. “
She mumbled a “thanks.” and headed out the door.
It was around 6:30 p.m. when she returned home. She took a quick shower and changed to her worn out pajamas.
By the time she came out of the shower, it was time to eat. Harmony sat down with Ariel and her husband, Nick.
They served themselves and once it got quiet, Nick asked “Are you excited for school tomorrow?”
Harmony played with her food and smiled “Yeah, I guess. It’s just hard that this has been my second year in High school and I’ve switched school three times already.”
Ariel placed her hand on Harmony’s. “Sweetie, we know it’s hard for you. Being a foster child isn’t easy. But we are proud of you because you are such a great kid. I’m sure you’ll make tons of friends. Isn’t that right Nick?”
Nick took a bite out of the steak and nodded.
Harmony smiled at them and replied “I know that I’ve been here for about a week but, you guys are the best foster parent I’ve ever had. You make me feel comfortable staying here.”
Nick finished his food and grinned as if pleased with Harmony’s reply and said “ Ariel and I have a surprise for you tomorrow so I think you should go get some rest. We will see you in the morning okay?”
Harmony nodded and once done she headed upstairs to her room.
New school, new reputation. She chanted in her thoughts and drifted into sleep.
