I’d slept in until mid day, the house was eerily silent. Usually you could hear Connor writing a new song or practising a cover, Dad was usually doing something which made a lot of noise whether it was hovering or re-building some apart of the house, he could never sit down for longer than 5 minutes. But today, there was nothing, just the sound of my own breathing to keep me company. I picked up my phone, noticing it flash telling me I had a message.

Connor: We’ve gone to Brads, meet us here at 4pm, and wear the clothes I picked out for you on my bed. Sara and Charlea will be round later. Mum and dad are with us – C xx

What on earth were they planning? Why did I have to wear specific clothing to go to Brad’s house? I decided to check out what he’d picked after I’d had a shower and eaten breakfast considering I was really hungry. As I was eating my cereal I heard someone knock on the door. I trudged to through the hallway, unlocked the door and pulled it open. Sara and Charlea stood before me carrying the biggest make up bags I have ever seen.

“Let me guess, they’ve planned some sort of party haven’t they?” I rolled my eyes and let them in. “They know I hate parties.”

“Elle, just enjoy yourself for one night, for us?” Sara pleaded.

“Besides, I’m sure you’ll love it” Charlea grinned. They knew something I didn’t know but it was no use trying to get it out of them.

“Fine, what do I have to do?” I asked, slapping a smile onto my face.

“Well, seeing as you’ve had a shower I guess we could start by doing your hair.” Sara suggested while Charlea nodded in agreement.

“You know where everything is, make yourself at home whilst I finish my breakfast,” I groaned. They ran up the stairs and I heard them make their way into my bedroom. Eating my cereal as slowly as possible to delay the process of being made to wear things I didn’t want to wear and go to party which I would probably end up hating anyway.

The girls started fiddling with my hair, neither of them really knew what they were doing, they just experimented until they found something they liked. I wasn’t allowed to see what I looked like; they’d covered up the mirrors and made a big deal about me not knowing until the ‘big reveal’. In all honesty, I thought it was nonsense; I wasn’t one to care about what people thought about me as long as they kept it to themselves. Spending hours getting ready for a party wasn’t really my thing and seeing as I’d been in a bad mood for at least a week, it didn’t help improve my attitude towards the party. Fortunately, they’d put on a film so I could at least enjoy the experience a little bit.

Eventually, they finished doing whatever they were doing to my hair and moved onto doing my makeup. Charlea was in charge of my face and Sara was painting my nails a dark shade of red giving me a clue as to what I was wearing. I’d lost interest in the film we were watching and began to just look mindlessly around my room, not really seeing anything or thinking about anything. I felt empty. I didn’t feel anything anymore and it was a strange experience, I was so used to feeling miserable that feeling nothing was sort of a relief but the past couple of months have been such a rollercoaster of emotions that it just seemed as though my body was incapable of keeping up.

“Done” Charlea exclaimed pulling me out of my empty thoughts. Sara pulled my hand closer to her face, still deeply concentrating on perfecting the final coat of nail varnish. “I’ll go get your dress” She squealed running into Connors room. I glanced over Sara’s shoulder at the clock on the wall; apparently we only had 30 minutes until I had to be at Brads for this ‘surprise party’ that I wasn’t supposed to know anything about. Sara finished my final nail and pulled away looking rather triumphant. She instructed to not move or touch anything because it would ‘ruin her masterpiece’.
