Everything happens for a reason, or at least that's what people say. For example; when you fall off your bike for the first time, steal something that isn't yours, or even lose someone you love. People say it all happens for a reason. That's at least what I thought when I met Waverley McKenzie Black.
It was the first day of my senior year in high school. I was heading to my second class of the day which was Drama I. I wasn't too thrilled about being in this class, it was mostly my brothers who told me to take it. They were all into drama and acting and told me it would get me out of my comfort zone. But this class mostly had freshman in it, and that's something I definitely wasn't looking forward to.
I walked into the classroom, which was located down in the basement of the school. As I walked in, I faced the teacher's desk which was right across the room from the door. The walls were covered in all sorts of different names of musicals; like Westside Story, Grease, Les Miserables, and many more. Five rows of desks were facing the front of the room; at the front sat two couches, desks, and room for people to stand and act in front of their audience.
The teacher stood at the front of the room, waiting for all the students to show up. She stood up straight, her dirty blonde hair back in a ponytail. Her face had a strict look but I knew that wasn't the case.
"Hey Purdy!" I yelled to her as I walked into her classroom, being one of the first to arrive.
"Well Alexandra, isn't it a surprise to see you here? Normally, it'd be one of your brothers in this classroom." She said with a welcoming smile and a laugh. Purdy and I have know each other for a while due to my brothers being apart of the drama program here.
"Well who do you think told me to sign up for this class?" I asked her and she nodded with a laugh, understanding me perfectly.
I looked at the seating chart that had been placed on one of the front desks. Of course, I was placed in the front desk of the first row. I sat down and throughout the next five minutes students filed in, finding their seats. A few freshman arrived late, not being able to find the classroom.
"Alright class, it's nice to meet you all, my name is Ms. Purdy. You are in my Drama I class and if you aren't then you are in the wrong classroom." She said with a smile and looked around seeing no one get up.
"Okay! So I thought we would start off with a get to know each other activity." Purdy said, starting off. "Every two minutes you have to go find a person you've never met and introduce yourself. Tell them your name, grade, and something interesting about yourself. After you meet three people we will get back together and have some of you share. Ready? Go!" She yelled, and all of us jumped up trying to find someone to meet.
Everything felt like slow motion, every person finding someone to talk to. I stood by my desk not really sure who to talk to, I wasn't really good with this kind of thing. All of a sudden a girl appeared next to me, she seemed energetic and a little overwhelmed.
"Hey I'm Jordan! I guess you're the person I going to get to know first!" She said really fast, so fast that I almost didn't understand what exactly she said.
"Yeah I guess so." I chuckled awkwardly, trying not to sound rude. "I'm Alex by the way."
"Oh okay! Well again, I'm Jordan. I'm a sophomore and I play three different sports! So what about you?" She asked in the same hyperactive tone.
"Well I'm a senior this year and I cracked my head open when I was a baby." I shrugged, trying to think of something interesting about me. I guess that'll work.
"Alright class, lets switch!" I heard Purdy yell from across the room.
Everyone stopped talking to the person in front of them and turned to someone new. I turned around and was faced with a girl who was a little shorter than me. She had long, light brown hair and she definitely looked like a freshman.
"Hi I'm Jackie. I'm a freshman and I can wiggle my ears." She laughed and said it in a soft, shy tone. I looked at her confused but then she started to actually wiggle her ears.
"Well I'm Alex, I'm a senior and I cracked my head open when I was a baby." I said with a smile and she smiled back, she looked really familiar. I think I've seen her around before.
"Alright everyone, time to switch!" We all heard Purdy's voice yell over everyone else's.
I turned around to meet someone else and that's when I saw her, Waverley Black. Her brown hair was up in a bun and her face looked so innocent. She had her lips curled into a small smile when she approached me.
"Hi, I'm Waverley." She said quietly, almost like she was nervous or something.
"Uh, I'm Alexandra, but people call me Alex." I state with a smile.
"Well it's nice to meet you, I'm a freshman and I have two different colored eyes." She laughs and smiles slightly.
"What? No way!" I say to her and lean in closer to look at her face. She looked at me kinda strange and laughed, but it was true. She had one blue eyes and one green eye. "That's awesome!"
"Thanks." She said with a small laugh probably because of my reaction.
"Well anyway, I'm a senior and I cracked my head open when I was a baby." I say with a smile, getting tired of saying that sentence.
"Ouch." She laughed and I smiled at how adorable her laugh sounded.
We heard Purdy's voice yell over all of us again to tell us to get close to our seats. I smiled at Waverley as we parted ways and went back to our seats.
I never realized that meeting her, would start to make a huge impact on my life.
