Chapter Twelve
Admittance
“You are seriously crossing into stalker status,” Krishna warned through clenched teeth and flaring frustration. She had been walking the shoreline towards the pier when she recognized the guy standing in the shadows, leaning against the post. For a moment, she contemplated turning around. But images of him chasing after her played, and she opted to stay on path. “What the hell are you doing here, Lucas?” she asked without stopping.
He didn’t hesitate in falling step with her. “You aren’t that difficult a person to track.”
The words ‘why doesn’t that surprise me’ crossed her mind as she fought to maintain friendly composure, more for appearances sake than anything. It was a public beach, at high noon.
“That is beside the point,” she said as glanced over at him. “Do I smell nice or something? Why are you following me?”
A distanced Riley laughed out loud at her comment, having heard it loud and clear.
Lucas pretended that jab didn’t hurt as he laughed it off. Inside, he was offended she would make jokes about his wolf. The word ‘wolf’ lingering in his head longer than it should have.
Krishna sighed. “Yes, I know you are a wolf, Lucas. And yes, I just read your mind.”
Lucas stopped walking; completely stunned by her admittance. Hearing his continued disbelief, Krishna, too, stopped walking; turning to face him as he stood several paces behind her.
“If you want to know, you’re gonna have to ask it out loud, Lucas. I don’t like talking through thought.”
“So you seriously can hear my thoughts! Oh my God, since when?” He asked with both curiosity and fear; he had several rather indecent thoughts while she was sleeping on his sofa.
She chuckled. “Yea, I know!”
“Holy shit! And you didn’t say anything?”
She shrugged. “You’re not the first guy to undress a girl through daydream, Lucas. There’s an entire population of hormonal teenage boys who could agree.”
Lucas’ cheeks felt warm as he suddenly felt the need to look away.
“I am part wolf, Lucas. Hence, this ability,” she said through thought, making his face snap back up at her and his eyes nearly bulge from their sockets. “But, don’t get used to it. I don’t like the intrusion,” she added before he could respond. She hated admitting her monster to him but, with given circumstances – and her slipping comment about smell, which she could totally have played off, but didn’t – she figured it was about time to tell him the truth. Even if it did bring out a side of her she hated to face, she figured it would be easier if things were in the open when she let him down.
His thoughts were freely flowing; she knew how he felt towards her, what he thought.
“I don’t know what to say. I never knew. I would never have guessed.”
She shrugged. “It’s not like I wear a sign on my head that says ‘part wolf here, excuse me if I bite your head off now’.”
Lucas laughed; the first real sign that he was accepting what she was saying. With relief, she turned and continued walking.
He caught right up to her. “So, if you were wolf all along, then you knew about me all along too.”
She glanced over at him. “Part wolf; and yes, well, no. Not before. But I guessed it when we were at your apartment.”
