In a large, straw-filled barn in a farmyard in South-East England lay a scruffy-looking tabby with a cut in her left ear, and her fur patchy in places, suckling a litter of kittens. They had been born the previous evening, and had not yet left their mother's side. The girls were called Buttons and Dolly, and the boys Patches and Teddy. And there was the runt of the litter, Scrabbles, the hero of our story. While his siblings fought over the best teats, he simply lay on his side, watching the stars through a hole in the barn's roof and purring contentedly, dreaming of the adventures he would have when he grew up.
