She watched the fog roll in from a distance, silky tendrils drifting across the tall grass. The green blades froze stiff, the cold breath of the fog too much.
"You know you don't have to, right? " She asked, worry in her green eyes.
"I know, but it's the only way," he replied. He put a warm reassuring hand on her shoulder.
She glanced up at him for a moment, then back to the creeping fog. Closer.
Thoughts raced through her mind, never stopping to clarify itself before bustling off again. There was so much to say, so much to do. But this was it. At least for now.
"Deon, ill visit, I promise," Kimi whispered. Her face felt hot, and quickly she wiped away the single silver tear that had fallen, hoping he hadn't noticed.
Deon sat, wrapping his arm around her as he sat on the wooden step. "I/ know you will. You'll somehow break free and return, like I always know you will." He turned to look at her scarred face. "Nights almost here, but it's not the end"
The fog was close now, a chill draft preceding the tendrils. There was an audible snap and crackle as the trees beyond the fence line became enveloped. She suddenly stood, not holding back the tears anymore. For the first time in her life, Kimi felt cold fear.
"Kimi, no! " Deon yelled trying to grab onto her arm before it as too late. As he caught her arm, he stood, trying to come up with any excuse he could to stop her
"Kimi, no let me. I'll do it. I can't let you choose this."
Deon felt his heartbeat freeze. The mist, just yards away, revealed a giant black manchado horse. 'no, it can't be Kaida' he thought, horrified.
"Kimi saw her beloved friend and wrenched her arm from his grasp. She stood just feet from the bank of fog. Tears glistened as she said, as confidently as she could,
"The choice is neither yours nor mine to make"
With that, her bluish white hair began to flow, her features dissapating in the murderous fog.
"NO! Kimi! "
He went to try and save her, but he knew it was too late. A high pitched scream ripped through the air, half human, half demon. Then the fog began to curl in on itself angrily, dissappearing as quickly as it had come.
"No...."
Deon fell to his knees, freely releasing the despair he had caged inside. Nothing could save her from herself, not even him now.
