First chapter of You Again! :) Hope you enjoy it

"Excuse me? Hello?" my boss waves her manicured fingers in my face.

"Earth to Cerys?" she says rudely, spraying my face with spit in the process.

I grit my teeth, trying to hide my annoyance.

"I..uh, yes, m'am?" I say, snapping out of my reverie and pretending I was actually listening to her warble on this whole time.

If I had a dollar for every time I wanted to murder her, I would be a millionaire.

"Why don't you have my coffee yet?" she says, irritated, her voice high and screechy.

I have to bite my tongue from imitating her.

"It's...right here, Dorothea." , I say sweetly, proffering the simmering cup of coffee.

"Large Double-shot cappuccino?".

"Yes, as usual m'am".

"Soy milk?".

"Yes."

"Did you add the chocolate topping?".

"Yes".

"Three sugars?"

"Of course."

Don't make me regret adding a vial of rat poison, I think to myself, one of the many ways Dorothea could die.

She doesn't even pay me back the money I spent on her bloody coffee, just nods once and snatches it out of my grasp, near scalding me.

I know what you're thinking.

Why put up with such a brat of a boss? Why not just quit?

The answer is simple -  I love my job more than anything in the world,  maybe except my cat, Shirley.

I live for my job. And ever since I was a little girl, I've dreamed of living in New York city.

Big lights, tall buildings,  hustle and bustle of cars and people, the city that never sleeps.

And I have been living in my apartment here for 3 years, and I am still in love with this city.

"Cerys, is everything ready for the conference this Friday?" , Dragon-Breath (everyone in the office calls her that behind her back), a.k.a Dorothea, snaps shrilly.

"Yes, Dra-...Dorothea, I've got everything sorted", I smile charmingly, my voice dripping with nectar.

That was a close one. I nearly called her Dragon Breath and the last thing I need is to be fired.

I let out a small sigh of relief.

"Okay then", Dorothea commands, "go through the manuscripts on your desk, let me know when you're finished.".

I head for my small office space beside Dorothea's. As her deputy and assistant, my office is right next to hers.

I glance lovingly at my familiar cluttered desk, stacked with heavy manuscripts and future published books ready to be read through.

Moving aside the white cord telephone and my big Macbook, I sit down and start reading.

Time goes by way too quickly, and before I know it, I'm nearly done and it's my lunch break.

Packing up my things, I grab my bag and plan to head down to the nearby deli to grab a donut and a wrap and maybe a coffee.

On the way to the elevator, I meet Sandra, who can be a bit over the top, but she was my first friend in NY and now one of my closest, actually.

"Hey, girl!", she exclaims. Sandra is bubbly and loud, always laughing and talking.

She is wearing her usual outfit; black pencil skirt, white blazer, sky-high red heels.

I roll my eyes playfully at her.

"Hey, Sandy. Wanna grab lunch?"

She swats at me with her black purse.

"Let's go then!" I let myself be dragged into the elevator.

"So are you ready for the big conference on Friday?", Sandra asks, while reapplying her lipstick in the elevator.

"Yeah, I think so!" I chuckle lightly. This conference is all that has been on my mind for the past few weeks.

Sandra runs her fingers through her curly red hair as the elevator comes to a stop.

We walk down the noisy, busy street.

"You are seriously so lucky, this conference could be your big break!", Sandra smiles at me as we order lunch at the deli.

I can't help grinning back.

"God, I know! I can't believe Dragon is going to let me run the presentations!" I say excitedly as we sit down at a small corner table, near the blasting air con.

"I mean, this is my first time doing this, Dorothea will be assessing me", I continue, biting into my wrap.

Sandra flicks at my wind-blown brown hair playfully.

"That's why you got to nail it. So Dorothea knows you have what it takes", she says.

I smile at my friend fondly.

Then she starts eating at the edge of my chocolate frosted donut and I swat at her, laughing.
