“LAURA!” Emily shrieked. She had yelled at me so loudly that our taxi driver slammed on the brakes, and I smacked my forehead against the seat in front.
“What the actual fuck?” I snapped, as I rubbed the throbbing, red bump that was beginning to form on my head. I thought my head was about to explode.
“Damn I’m so sorry. I’ve been calling your name for the past two minutes. You were away in dreamland. Tell me you weren’t thinking about him again?” Emily said softly. I turned to look at her. I couldn’t be mad at her, as her startling green eyes peered into mine. She always knew what I was thinking but simply has no idea how big and booming her voice is.
“Of course I’m thinking about him” I moaned, as tears welled up in my eyes for what seemed like the millionth time that week.
“No tears Laura” my best friend ordered as she ran her finger under my waterline and handed me a tube of mascara. “Now fix yourself up, because we’re almost there!”
As I yanked my compact mirror out of my handbag, I continued to think about him. He was my ex boyfriend, the boy who I believed was the love of my life. I had devoted two years of my life to him only for him to break my heart. Granted, it had been an entire year since I had ended things with Jack, but there wasn’t a day that I did not regret it. I would take a lifetime more of the verbal abuse and neglect I suffered at the hands of Jack rather than another day of being without him. He had totally fucked my mind over and nobody knew this better than Emily.
“We’re heeeeeeeere” Emily announced, once again in a decibel that I was pretty sure only dogs could hear. As I glanced out of the window, through the dark night, I could not believe what I was seeing. It was the most phenomenal complex of apartments that I had ever seen.
“You’re kidding right? There is no way in hell that we can afford this rent!” I gasped. It was like something out of Victorian times. It was mesmerising to look at.
“Hell yeah we can. If we’re going to do this, we’re doing it in style” Emily grinned. Her smile was infectious, much like her personality. “And my parents know the owner, so we got a major discount” she winked.
I couldn’t believe it, here we were at last, in London. We had just sat our Leaving Cert back home in Ireland and had therefore finished school. So instead of jetting off on an alcohol filled LC holiday to Spain or Greece with our other friends, Emily and I decided to spend the entire summer in London as I hoped to finally get over Jack before beginning college in September. We were in for some major bonding time and it was going to be an unforgettable trip.
After we dragged our overpacked suitcases up to our apartment 4B and had inspected every corner of our new, incredible apartment, we collapsed into bed. A good night’s sleep is what we both badly need of, but it seemed that our new neighbours had other ideas...
