ANNABETH POV

I saw the girl, E, run out of the woods and silently join the campfire sing-along. A minute or so later Nico appeared. Literally. I looked over at Percy and Nico just melted out of the shadows next to him in that really creepy yet casual way of his.
The songs ended and Chiron moved forward.
"Don't forget that capture the flag is tomorrow night," he announced "I trust you have chosen your alliances wisely. The dryads and forest nymphs have asked me to let you know of a new monstrous presence they have sensed recently. The games will still go ahead but I urge you to take extra care. Now, I think it's time for you all to retreat to your cabins."
As I began to make my way back to the Athena cabin, Piper strolled up next to me.
"Hey Pipes." I greeted. Instead of answering me, she nodded to her right-diagonal-front. I looked in the direction in which her attention was focused and realised that her eyes kept flicking between Nico and the new girl.
"What?" I inquired, intrigued.
"Not quite sure," she mused, "Nico and Will broke up, in case you didn't know."
"We were told." I stated.
"You got a team for capture the flag?" She asked
"Only the best." I replied.
"Nico with you?"
"Yeah."
"Get the newbie on your team as well." And she slipped away.
"Piper!" I called. No answer. I had no idea why she was being so mysterious though her instincts were normally correct. Since we'd already made an alliance with the Hermes cabin, E was automatically on our team anyway. So that wasn't a problem.

"Nico, E, I want you two on defence. You don't leave this spot, understand?"
I was met by two rather grumpy faces mumbling yes. I rolled my eyes and moved on.
"Malcom, you and the rest of the Athena cabin are defending our border, Hermes, you join them. Except Conner and Travis, you're with Percy and I. Thalia, Hephaestus, you guys are on defence, but NOT stealing the flag. Just keep the other side occupied. Is everyone clear on what they are doing?" There was a rattle of weapons and a few enthusiastic shouts; "Then let's CAPTURE THAT FLAG!!!" I yelled.
The horn sounded and we all charged to our positions.
Percy, Connor, Travis and I were almost in enemy territory when a blood-curdling scream came from our flags' position. We raced back and were met with a truly horrific sight. Nico had been thrown against a tree and lay unconscious at the foot of it, his sword at the other side of the clearing.
And, even worse, E lay helpless underneath the claws of a huge serpent with a head at each end of its body.
"What is it?" Whispered Percy.
"An Amphisbaenia. It spawned from the blood that dripped from Medusas' head when the original Perseus flew over the Libyan Desert holding it."
Percy spun his sword in the palm of his hand, the way you might spin a tennis racket.
"The we'd better fix his handy-work." He replied. And then he charged. The head that wasn't looking at E snapped up and hissed at Percy.
Knowing that it could still very well finish off the poor girl, I drew my dagger and joined the battle. I stabbed the serpent in the foot but that only irritated it. I slashed at its' neck and it screeched in pain. Suddenly, its' colossal wings unfolded and it took to the skies. I stared after it, trying to work out my next move when an arrow appeared, seemingly from nowhere, impaled in the monsters' wing. I whipped around to see Frank standing behind me, Hazel by his side, bow raised and preparing to shoot another arrow. I called to Hazel and pointed at the serpent. Immediately she understood what I meant. She grabbed a spear from an Ares camper standing near her and ran to the centre of the clearing. Her eyes followed the serpent as it circled the trees above us. She took her stance, aimed, and threw the spear as hard as she could.
It sailed through the air and impaled itself in the serpent, pinning it's already injured wing to its side. The serpent fell, and hit the ground with a thud. I dropped my dagger in the ground and ran to the monsters side. As I ran, Percy threw me his sword. I caught it by the blade, flipped it and brought it down across the serpents neck. It's head rolled away and the serpent turned to dust in front of our eyes.
