Foreword

For someone who loves Kuroko no Basket so much you'd think I would've already posted a Kise X OC book already, right? I mean, technically I did, but that wasn't going anywhere. After lots of messing around I finally decided to write this: Assumptions.

This is going to be a lighthearted, romantic fanfic that I hope you'll find humorous. There won't be anything too heavy or depressing because I like writing (mostly) happy stories.

The story's set at the beginning of season one/the first few chapters right as the Interhigh Tournament's taking place. The protagonist of the story, Suzuki Mari, has just moved for the first time from her home in California to Japan. There will be some cursing, but it's nothing you haven't read before if you watched KNB.

Also, I think it's noteworthy to say that my story will feature manga!Kise more than anime!Kise. The main difference is that manga!Kise is a lot bigger jerk than what the anime adaptation makes him seem like.

A lot of the bizarre conversations Suzuki has with the Japanese students are based on my personal experiences when talking to my foreign friends. It's interesting to see how little people from different countries know about each other's lifestyles.

I feel like this story will be unlike any other fanfic I've written before. Whether that's a good or bad thing is yet to be determined.

Before we begin this journey together, I'd love to give a big shout-out to all my lovely readers who have supported me since when I posted my first chapter on here in the summer of 2014, and those who have come along over the years to read my work. You guys are the ones who make writing fun.

Without further ado, let's move onto the short prologue of Assumptions!

Prologue

If you asked me, I'd say stereotypes are poor assumptions borne from ignorance.

I mean if you don't know a lot about something, you tend to listen to what the people around you say, right? Think of all the little kids who fall for thousands of lies because older folks tell them it's the cold, hard truth.

Stereotypes are everywhere. It's almost a guarantee that if you talk to someone they'll agree that the majority of—if not all—jocks are dumb, cheerleaders are plastic, evil Barbie dolls, and nerds have no hopes of dating some good-looking.

Travel even further into the realm of stereotypes and you'll come across the ugly racist ones. I'll save everyone the pain by skipping that.

But honestly, I've never had a problem with how people viewed Americans before I moved to Japan. They were curious about what life was like in the States, and I understood that perfectly fine. Of course, I didn't care for the "How many guns does your family have?" and "Do you eat hamburgers every day?" questions, but it was innocent enough.

It's just that everything got out of control in the tiny span of 24 hours. I went from being "the new foreigner, Suzuki-chan" to the "Crazy American" in the blink of an eye. That drastic change was something I could've never accomplished myself.

No, it was all Kise Ryouta's fault.

Do I hate him for it? I mean, I did at first, but then I got to know him. It turns out he's not all bad. It's just that we had a 'misunderstanding.'

Okay, this is really confusing. How about I start from the beginning...
