Chapter Fourteen

Control

Lucas was finding the separation from Krishna impossible. His wolf kept wanting to sniff her out, while his human was doing his best at pulling back the reigns. As much as he was eager to be with her, to take the first steps in the mating ritual, he didn’t want to scare her away. And, based on their time spent together earlier that day, he knew it wouldn’t take much to do just that.

Meanwhile, Morgan had reached out to him and it both angered and worried him. Hearing the pack while human was an alpha thing that he made clear had better only happen in emergency. But the timing couldn’t be worse as he worried answering would mean him heading home.

“Tell Morgan to get his furry ass in the house, and on the phone,” Lucas barked when his sister answered the phone. It didn’t take but a moment for her to listen. “Tell me the house is on fire and that you haven’t completely lost your mind.”

“That’s an excellent choice in responding,” he said in reference to the phone versus mind.

“Morgan,” Lucas warned through a growl.

“Well, it’s Jay. He and the boys went out for a run, and you know Jay, always showing off.”

“Your point?” Lucas asked in frustration while pinching the bridge of his nose.

“He got hurt, Luke. Vince and Tony took him to Elijah’s place to heal,” he said with remorse. It was his job to look over things while Lucas was away, and he failed.

“What happened?”

“The Devati’s. The guys say one of them was sniffing too close and Jay decided to give him a warning. He may have broken his back, Luke. It’s not good.”

“Shit,” Lucas said as he began tapping his foot against the floor. He was hovering in the back corner of a bar, where the payphone was located, and trying to keep his cool so passing patrons wouldn’t be suspicious of him. It wasn’t working as one guy kept looking over at him. “Is there threat?” he asked as quiet as possible.

“There might be now, but I don’t think there ever was before. Jay got the brunt of it, so probably not.”

Lucas glanced up at the patron again. “Look, I can’t talk here,” he said as he turned his back and lowered his voice even more. “Just keep an eye out, get the others to help watch. Jay will be fine alone, just order Elijah not to let him leave. I’ll check in later.” He hung up before Morgan could respond, his eyes traveling back to the patron who was suddenly not there anymore. He scanned the room before heading towards the door, only to be stopped by the patron with a forceful tug on the back of his jacket.

“What the hell?” He asked as he was thrown up against the wall.

The guy was not much taller than Lucas, but appeared shorter as he held Lucas by his throat up against the wall. His eyes were a deep black and his breath reeked of booze. “They don’t let dogs into this establishment, boy,” the guy said menacingly.

Lucas frantically looked at the patrons around them, surprised to see not a single one was aware of the scene playing out in the hall behind them. “But they’ll let you in here, well that’s comforting,” he said sarcastically as his eyes landed on the guy again. He didn’t bother to fight the choke hold until now, as the guy squeezed tighter.

Seconds trickled by until the guys grip finally loosened and Lucas was dropped to the floor. His hand instinctually went to his throat and he noticed another guy, much the same in dark appearance as the first, standing just off to the side. He looked back and forth between the two until it clicked in his head. “Seriously? Big and bad until mom comes calling, then you wuss up?”
