                                                                     CHAPTER 1

I woke up and saw a face starring at me. My first reaction was to scream. When I screamed the masked figure screamed. Without really thinking about it I picked up the frying pan that was laying on my right side. I had fell asleep onthe kitchen table after studying for my math test today. When I had raised the frying pan, the masked figure yelled "Stop! It's me Louis!" I put the frying pan down relieved that it was only my brother ,but still mad he would play such a prank on me. I'll get him back later. "Haha you should have seen your face," he said. "I thought you were gonna pee!" he said laughing. "Yea very funny,"I said punching him in the arm. My brother was tall,so whenever we talked I had to look up at him. He had short curly black hair, and always wore a smile that made you want to smile for the rest of the day. Me and him were totally different. I was short about 5'2 and he was about 6'3. I looked at the clock and was immediatly awake. It was 8:54 a.m. My brother and I had to be at the bus stop at 9:20 or we would be late for school. "Crap!" I say as I'm running down the hall.I brush my teeth, comb my hair, apply my usual makeup:eyeliner, mascar, foundation, and lipstick that was a light pink color.

My mother,Beatrice, was waiting downstairs for us to leave. My mom stopped Louis and me before we left. This was a sign to me something was happening. "Today is a big day for both of you,"she started. "What do you mean? The only thing thats happening today is my usual classes and then my math test."I said. My mother just simply smiled. She was a small gentle woman with light brown hair that hung down just a couple above her waist, just like mine. "Whats happening today mom?" I asked with a worried look on my face. "You'll see," she replied with a smile."Why can't you just tell us?"my brother asks my mother. She doesn't answer the question, but there is a tiny gleam in her eye that wasn't there before. With that she shoves us out the door.

"What do you think that was about?" Louis asks as we walk towards the bus stop. "I..I don't know." I say. It frightens me to not know what is happening today. What was my mom so excited about? Then I thought for a second... what do my parents do when we're not home? The question bothers me the whole way to the bus stop. I was in my last year of high school, and so was Louis. When we board the bus I sit next to my bestfriend Nevaeh. She wasn't a person to be messed with and is super crazy, but thats the things I love about her. She is an outgoing person, with brown smooth skin and was pretty. I believe I can tell her anything, but sometimes its just different.

I can't stand it anymore.I have to ask if her parents told her anything about whats happening today.I cant. You must! No! Yes! Just ask her. My thoughts keep battling against each other and I just decide to ask her."Did your parents tell you about anything that going to happen today?"I blerted out. She nodded. "They told me that today we would be tested to find which division we would belong to. We don't have to choose what the test says though. There are 5 divisions:Armistice,Gallant,Prior,Adurnation and Celestary." I look at her with a puzzled look."What division are we in?" I asked her, wanting to learn more about the place I call home. "We are in Armistice."she replys. I was slient for the rest of the way to school. All I could think about was why we were put in divisions and what they mean.

As the bus got closer to school I had put my jacket back on and my backpack. Then as the closer we got the bus didn't slow down like it normally would. We weren't going to school. I watched as we drove past the school and my heart was beating fast. If we aren't going to school where are we going? I see more school buses behind us. I guess they already dropped off everyone who wasn't a senior. I think we didn't stop because only seniors ride my bus. We tend to scare off the younger people at the beginning of the year.

We approached a round building that I've only been in three times. Those were only for concerts. Don't be stupid they wouldn't let us out of school for a concert if we weren't performing in it. So what were we doing here? I look into a crowd of people. They must be in another district.

They make us line up outside and we enter into the dome building first. When we file in I see we are standing in a room full of seats like an auditorium. Soon everyone else files into the people all around me. A lady walks towards the stage her hair pulled back into a bun so tight I expect her hair to fall out."Hello,"she says with a smile,"We are here today to give you a test that will help you understand where you may stand in our city." I see Nevaeh tap her foot on the groubd at a rapid pace."We will call five peoples names at random to be tested,"she continues. "The first people are

Katherine Hughes, Amanda Burden, Ciera Frestall,Heaven Rey and Frances Durling." Louis and Nevaeh stare at me as I get up and walk towards the 5 rooms. Keep calm its just a test. Its just a test. It is only a test.

"Hi I'm Zoey." The woman in the third room says."Katherine,"is all I can manage to say at the moment. As she looks at her clipboard I notice how short her hair is and she has 4 piercings in one ear. She is very pretty and looks like she's in her early twenties. "So first I'll have to hook you up to a machine that transports your mind into believing what you see is real, but its not." She hooks me up to the program and i'm in my house. Then I hear a scream. "Mom?" I  yell and get no answer. I am now alarmed and yell again "MOM!" I rush downstairs to see my mom held at gunpoint I scream again. Then I walk forward still afraid and exactly when the gun goes off, I push my mom out of the way and get hit in the side. The pain eases and I'm at a new place.

I see a girl with a wild face in front of me. She looks lost and heless. I ask her if shes hungry. She nods. I take my backpack off and give her an apple and a sandwich. She smiles and disappears. Then I am back in the chair I was in orginally. Zoey tells me my test results showed that I was Gallant. They are brave and would risk their lives doing something while they are also willing to help people in need. I smiled and walked out the room.
