To say that Lena Kane was pampered was an understatement. She wore nothing but designer brands, she never associated with anyone of a lower class, and she ate nothing but the finest foods. Her entire life was about to be flipped upside down.
As Lena packed her bags, she couldn't stop herself from thinking it. Her father must hate her. Otherwise, why would he force her to leave their beautiful home in Malibu, only to send her to live in an apartment in downtown Chicago? It didn't make any sense. She was being forced to leave her lifestyle. Her yoga classes, her five star cook, and her beautiful room. All would be ancient history when she boarded that plane and headed across the country.
All she had wanted to do this summer was self explore. Sure, she knew she was the daughter of major business mogul, Josiah Kane, and she was smart, and kind, but that was the extent of what she knew about herself. She had wanted to take a trip to some remote country, and really get to know herself. Instead, she was being sent to what her mother used to call "the slums." And no matter how many times Lena begged her father to tell her why, he said no. So off she went.
Now, as she stood in this tiny apartment, she sneered. It wasn't an awful apartment, but it certainly wasn't up to what her father's standards would normally be. She couldn't take just standing there anymore, so she opened the door to her apartment, locked it behind her, and took off down the street. As she walked, she looked at the streets around her, but mostly, the people. She tucked her head down a few times as men cat called and whistled at her, her face feeling the rush of heat every time. Then, a commotion on her right snapped her out of it. The small girl ran behind a corner, simply watching the scene unfold.
A girl of a lean build was standing over a man that was only slightly bigger than her, but nonetheless, he looked so much smaller in that moment. He was cowering away from her, and there was blood on his face. The girl with mocha colored skin held a gun in her left hand, and she was panting over him. Lena's eyes widened, her hand flying to cover her mouth as the other girl's head looked up and over, catching Lena staring. As soon as their eyes met, Lena began to run, shaking and crying. What had her father gotten her into? Why had he placed her here, in obvious danger? Was the girl in the streets really going to kill that man? These were the questions she contemplated as she fell asleep on her couch that night, shaking as the scene played over and over again.
