"Hey mom!" I said running to her after my first day of middle school. Kayla was sitting on the table colouring in her book.
"Aww honey! How was it? Did you make friends? We're they girls?" She cooed pinching my cheeks.
"Mom." I groaned. She just giggled.
She walked over to the kitchen and began her cooking for later on this evening.
"So what's my lovely Kayla up to?" I said ruffling her hair.
"Danny!" She squealed, twirling around on her chair to face me. She wrapped her little hands around my neck and I hugged her back.
"I coloured this liar for you!" She said holding up a picture of a blue lion. I chuckled.
"It's called a lion Kay." I said. She giggled. I grabbed the picture and shoved it in my jeans pocket.
"I'll be back in a minute Kay." I said smiling. She flashed her adorable little smile and went back to colouring.
I ran a hand through my dark brown hair and trudged up the stairs. I walked inside of my room and threw my bag on the floor. I peered put of my window and my dads car was back.
I threw on a black hoodie to cover up my childish spongebob tee and I ran down the stairs.
"Dads back! Dads back! Dads back!" I chanted running through the living room. Our dad always worked and rarely came home and when he did it was really fun, until mom and him started arguing. I pulled out Kayla's chair and grabbed her hand. We both waited on the other side of the door like lost puppy's.
The door swung open, revealing a flustered and angry dad.
"Daddy!" Me and Kayla shouted and hugged him. He pushed us away and walked past us like we weren't there.
"Dad?" I asked my voice trembling a little. No answer.
"What's wrong with daddy?" Kayla asked, worried tears filling her eyes.
"It will be ok Kayla! I promise. He's probably just tired." I lied.
I didn't know if it would be ok! I didn't know what was happening. Usually when dad comes back he's happy and relaxed again until his daily argument starts with mom.
"Andrew, how was your day!" My mom said happily probably facing the stove, not knowing our dads current mood. He strolled to the kitchen and me and Kayla followed hand in hand, making as little noise as we could.
"I wouldn't be so happy if I were you." My dad said sharply.
"Excuse me?" My mother said turning on her heels to face my father.
"You heard me." Dad said sternly. I gulped not knowing what would happen next. The door reopened slamming against the walls around it.
Two tough looking men stormed through the house like they owned it.
"Wh-y are y-you her-e.." I stuttered to them, shielding Kayla with my arms.
"What are you gonna do if I don't answer? Tickle me to death?" One of the men spat before cackling evilly.
Our parents had argued lots before but I made sure Kayla heard none of it, it had never gone to this level before and I was shaking. I was truly frightened.
The men both looked at each other and at the same time they pulled sharp knives from their pockets. They had stained blood splattered all over. I stared in horror as they smiled wickedly.
"Come on, you pathetic children." One said shoving us fully into the kitchen. My mother smiled sympathetically at us until the men came into eye view.
