My head was pounding, and my lip was bleeding. I hated my life. I always got beaten up at the orphanage. Nobody liked me there, and the feeling was mutual; I hated every single soul there.
I looked out the orphanage window as everyone played in the courtyard.
"Cassie?"
The voice made me jump. I turned around and it was Mrs. Miles, the head mother. She was dressed in her usual outfit, and she was smiling at me. "I have someone you may want to meet."
I sighed and walked into her office with her. Who would want to meet me? What if they want to adopt me? Questions danced through my head. When we walked in, there was a lady sitting there. I recognised her. It was Mayor Mills. What was she doing here?
"Hello mayor." Mrs. Miles said as she sat down behind her desk. "Hello Mrs. Miles." The mayor replied smiling. "Cassie, please sit." Mrs. Miles said, motioning to the open seat beside Mayor Mills. "A-Are you sure?" I asked. Mrs. Miles smiled and nodded. "I won't bite, sweetie." Mayor Mills said smiling. I sat down, already shaking, and Mayor Mills looked at me. "Are you okay honey?" She asked. I nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine." I said softly.
"Well, Mrs. Mayor, why don't you tell Cassie why you're here?"
The mayor looked at me smiling. "I'm here because I want to take you to a good home." She said to me. I looked at her. "Really? Me?" I asked. I was shocked. The mayor nodded. "We wanted to check with you first before we did anything." I smiled a little. "It's fine with me. I just don't know if you're going to like me." I said, my smile fading. The mayor looked at me.
"Why would I be adopting you if I didn't like you?" She asked me. I shrugged. "I don't know. Its just that nobody really likes me." I said softly. The mayor put her hand on my shoulder, making me look at her. I smiled as she did too. "Okay, so would you like me to sign the papers?" She asked me. I nodded. "Alright, go grab your things." Mrs. Miles said.
I walked into my room and the girls I shared the room with were still not in there. I quickly packed my things and walked back to the main office. "Well, Cassie, this is it." Mrs. Miles said smiling. "Are you ready to go to your new home?" I smiled and nodded. Mayor Mills walked out of the orphanage with me and we went to her car.
"I hope you like your new brother." She said. I looked at her. I knew this was going to be hard. I didn't know how I was going to go from not knowing who the mayor was to calling her my mom. "What's his name?" I asked smiling. "His name is Henry." She said smiling. I nodded. "So, is there anything I need to know about living with you?" I asked. "Any rules or anything?" My mom sighed. "There's one thing I want you to be careful of."
I looekd at her and she was concerned. "What is it?" I asked. "His name is Pan." My mom said softly. "Peter Pan?" I asked. My mom nodded. I didn't know who he was really. I just heard stories about him. He was evil and his shadow followed people around. That was about all that I knew about him.
We reached the house, and we walked in. A younger boy was sitting on the floor in front of a table reading a book. "Henry, this is your sister. Her name is Cassie." Henry looked up and smiled. "Hi Cassie." He said smiling. "Hi Henry." I said smiling myself. I think I was actually going to like it here.
