Chapter Five – Triumph and Threats
Samuel blinked at the ceiling with smiling, grey eyes. He was awake for a while for when the reality of the day struck at him, he wished he could retreat back to his dream. He was struggling with much toil to gather fragments of that fantasy, where he had dreamed of Linda and he intertwined much passionately in his large, canopy bed…
But that was all he could recall and Samuel remained wide-awake day-dreaming of the rest.
With a pucker, nonetheless, Samuel brought his thoughts to a halt. Was he even in his right mind? Linda would be sixteen come the wedding day but that would not result in the slightest variance – she was yet an adolescent and he frowned at the thought.
Would she even allow him near her – a single touch, at-least?
With a desperate sigh, Samuel made his way towards the attached bathroom. Every night he would dream of them together – as an erogenous couple, and when the blazing sun signalled the dawn of another gloomy day he would remain in his bed, dismayed and wound up.
What exactly did Francis have in mind?
Samuel knew to a great extent that his father was not a saint where the union of both districts were concerned. Just as his unruly predecessors, his father seemed pleasant on the exterior while being naught but rotten flesh from within.
However, Samuel alone had turned out to be unique – unlike the rest of the Northerners who were destined to rule.
His heart bled with guilt. His brain screamed to him that he ought to recommence locating his spies to gather a clarification or a hint behind his father’s evil conspiracy. He had been akin to discovering so until that day – when his parents informed him of the visit to the bride’s house…
Samuel clenched his fist that was clamped around the soap. He did not know why but upon seeing Linda asleep like a child, whose beauty was only then maturing to a promising, exotic lady – he knew that he could not allow Francis to hurt her. Somewhere deep within his gut his sentiments experienced a pang of heaviness at the sight of her slumbering form. And he simply knew in his heart that he had to defend her. So he played along. He decided he would protect her and leave behind his self-regard.
She was innocent – much too naïve, and Samuel could not conceive the slenderest cause for his father to have preferred her as a ruler. Such a title did not befit her personality by the slightest inch. She deserved to be treated with fragile tenderness. To be loved, to betroth a man who would promise to never hurt her and who would bless her with his progeny and to live happily ever after…
And Zach would not disclose any part of the supposed plan to him.
Samuel was brought to his senses upon seeing the soap as a flat mass on the flat stretch of his palm. Sighing, he washed the mess away and rushed through his bath. Zach was undoubtedly a pain in the a** who riled him up even further, given his current traumatic state.
Samuel dried himself and swiftly chose a black, long sleeved T-shirt and his favourite denim to be dressed for the day. He had to occupy his mind with any task for thinking over post marriage intimacies was gradually turning him into a mad-man. For he knew deep within that he was craving for events that had not the least possibility of occurrence.
Even though he kissed girls, fooled around and played naughty – it had never gone beyond that. True to his mother’s expectations of him, he had never shared a bed with another girl. And to think that Linda had been chosen as 'the one' considering his line of un-tame fantasies – he was deeply frustrated in a way.
The mansion wherein Samuel resided with his parents and the minor staff resembled a miniature castle such that it obscured nearly five minutes to reach the kitchen. He was welcomed then by a homely sight that was quite extra-ordinary from the mansion’s daily routine. His mother, Laura, stood at the stove humming and organizing breakfast – she was clearly enjoying herself. Samuel stood at the kitchen entrance with quirked eyebrows at the sight.
