"Table for one please." I ask the young waitress at the local diner. Eddie's has become my secret special place recently. Mostly because its the only decent place open 24-hours. The red haired waitress leads me to a corner booth, and pours me a cup of coffee. I silently thank her as she walks away, I close my eyes and breathe in the familiar scent of dust and old men. Sure its not ideal, but its the only place open at two forty-five in the morning. The sticky red booth, and the dusty windows welcome me.

After my dad left us, I started having trouble sleeping. So I was in search of something to do while the rest of the country was asleep. Before you think about how I function at school the next day, I'm in online school so I can learn whenever I want. My mom used to be a teacher at my high school, but when she lost the baby, she started drinking, a lot. So she got fired and sits in her room crying and stuff.  My regular schedule usually starts off with me waiting for my mom to drink herself to sleep again. Once I'm sure there aren't anymore doors slamming and I hear my mom's drunk snores, I grab my bag and jump out the window and walk to Eddie's. It's here, that I have time to actually think.

  "Eden!"

The voice fills my head with the memory of the one person I don't want to see right this moment. Sam Pottorff.

"Eden? Helloo?" He calls at the back of my head.

I turn my body around and face him while my entire body sighs. Sam is my neighbor, and my best friend since third grade. Why I don't want to see him you may ask, well, he isn't exactly the most calm person in the world. And I kinda come here to be calm, get it?

"Sam, why are you here?" I ask, while he sits across from me.

He obviously ignored the additude in my voice as he takes a drink from  my coffee and begins to tell me some story about some new kid who came to school. I don't even bother reminding him that I am enrolled into online school now, so I just let him continue.  I checked the clock on the wall above his head and began to get my stuff together.

"I had a great time. Really we should do this more often, but I need to go." I say as I speed walk away from him, "and you can keep the coffee!"
