Prologue

"Why can't I have friends?" I asked.

My father looked down at me, his gaze was emotionless.

"We have to keep you safe Aurora." My father said intently. I looked to my mother, tears welling in her eyes.

"Why do you have to keep me safe, papa?"

"Aurora, sweetie, the world outside is a bad place." My mother looked away from me when I met her beautiful eyes.

"And bad places have bad people, bad boys who will hurt you when you grow up." My father sounded so confident that I had to believe him.

"How would they hurt me?"

"We can't tell you. You're too young to know." My father's voice sent a frightened shiver running down my spine.

"I'm not too young." I looked down at my fairytale book. I examined the pages of the Beast and Belle dancing. She looked so pretty. She was so nice even to the bad Beast.

"You're only ten years old. When you're eighteen, you'll know."

I opened my mouth to ask another question, but my dad stopped me before I could speak.

"Enough questions Aurora. Curiosity killed the cat. You must learn when to stop asking." He grabbed my mother's arm and pulled her out of my room.

I didn't know it then, but this conversation was a conversation I would never forget.
