Pain.
The first thought that flooded my mind was pain. I tried opening my eyelids to catch a glimpse of the world around me, but my body screamed with the seemingly simple task.
I tried to take in a deep breath.
Breath, breath.
After about five long, slow breathes of air, I managed to open my eyelids into a slight crack. I peered at the room around me, proving more difficult than it ought to be. The room was mostly dark, a faint light glowing from a candle by the nightstand.
I’ve never seen that nightstand before. Now that I think about it, I’ve never seen this room before. I looked at the nearly-black walls and the dark grey carpet. I glanced at the dresser and the door. Nothing was familiar.
Where was I?
“Ow.” I muttered when I tried to sit up, the pain in my head throbbed with my movement.
Wait a minute....
The question to ask myself wasn’t, "Where was I?" It was, "Who was I?" What was my name? How could I forget my name?! What happened? Have I gone insane? Have I died?
My head began to feel like a bowling ball, I had to lay back down, but I wasn’t going back to sleep.
“I said no!” I heard a low voice say harshly. I think he had a British accent, but maybe I wasn’t hearing properly.
“Fine, fine. I won’t do it. God, what’s gotten into you?” Said a second voice. The second voice got louder with every word.
The door swung open.
“Ah, you’re awake. About time.” Said the man. I strained to capture his appearance, but my vision was too fuzzy. I was capable enough to make out blonde hair and blue eyes. "Does this hurt?" His fingers pressed to the side of my head.
"Ahh!" I winced as my hands flew up to bat his hand away.
"What's going on up there?!" The raspy voice in the hallway said.
"Just checking her injury. Calm down you fucker!" He yelled back.
"Who are you?" My voice cracked, a result of my dry throat. I can't seem to remember anything, maybe this guy is my father? Maybe my brother? If I was staying in this house, he must be taking care of me, right? Maybe he could tell me my name...
"I'm Benji. What's your name?" He asked dryly. My heart sunk a little. He didn't know who I was either. What was I doing here if he didn't know me?
"I...I don't know..."
"You don't know your own name?" Disbelief was clear in his tone.
I shook my head. "I can't remember..." I whispered, hoping to reign control over my voice.
Benji looked concerned, but he didn't say anything else. Instead he walked out, leaving me on my own.
"Did you find out her name?" The raspy voice said.
"No, she doesn't know it."
"What the hell? How could she not know her own damn name? Get the fuck back in there and find out!" Raspy was losing patience. I decided to nickname him "Raspy" until I was further informed of his true name.
