Prologue
☸☸☸
A man walks down a lonely street, surrounded by clouds of black mist, mist that gives off the scent, the feel of evil.
"Find him," his low, husky voice broke the the chilly mist hanging around the row of streetlamps around the corner, softening the light that the bulb was emitting.
A low, slithering sound erupted from somewhere; everywhere, it seemed, as the dark figures rose to meet the command.
A little boy was playing in a little area, next to his mother. "Trenton, let's go, now." The woman said softly, rubbing her hands up and down on her arms to keep warm.
"Wait, mommy," the little boy squealed as his mother lifted him up by the waist. "I want to finish playing," he whined.
"You can finish at home," the mother cooed, rocking him in her arms as she slowly moved towards the town square. "I promise."
Suddenly, the Shadows came around the corner. She moved backwards, stumbling across the rocky ground where the little boy was playing earlier.
A place with walls nearly everywhere, covered in red marks, bloody marks, covered in graffiti and useless junk. It had been used a a wasteland before. It was now a place where people threw garbage carelessly.
"Please, no," she pleaded. "I cannot have another member of my family taken away for no reason," she screeched, starting to sob as she shook uncontrollably. "I will do anything! Anything!" She whispered, her voice strained with hopelessness.
"Take the woman if you must," the man's voice came from behind in the square. "I don't need any scum in my way of business," he sneered, his face almost completely covered by the shadow of his hood.
"You!" The woman cried hysterically. "You, filthy, rotten...you were the one that tore my family apart! Do you realize what you have done? Have you no soul?" She cried helplessly. "I will sacrifice myself if it means life for my son," she begged.
"Then kill her," the man commanded roughly, stroking the stubble on his chin. The Shadows take to his demand immediately. One of them reached towards her, a long, black, wispy hang with fingers that were so skinny, they were like sticks. Long, spindly fingers reached for her throat.
They wrapped around an invisible string in the air, and the hand tugged. Screeching noises came from the Shadow's mouth, echoes of the woman's thoughts. The little boy was frozen in terror, huddled in a corner.
He closed his eyes, and the affair was over. His mother's body lay slumped on the ground, tongue lolling from her mouth and arms and legs splaying at her sides in odd angles.
"Take the boy," the man instructed gleefully, rubbing his hands together behind his finely crafted gloves. "We have completed this task for Him. We shall be rewarded greatly when he realizes," the man laughed sourly, in a crude type of way.
The Shadows showed their appreciation by rising up into the air and forming a shape; a circle with a square on top.
"Very good," he grinned maliciously, his eyes traveling downwards. "My lord, we have finished your task," he whispered, caressing the little boy's cheek slowy, crudely.
A small swirl of red and orange, like fire rose like a trickle, floated upward like a small bit of smoke. "Very good," a deep, booming voice spoke.
"Thank you, my lord," the man whispered, obviously pleased with himself.
"One more task for you, Hetalim," the voice said slowly.
