With a soft and deadly clatter, his wand fell to the floor. It lay still on the stone ground. Snape let out a gasp as his knees dropped. The snake had returned. The same snake that had haunted his dreams for years, had come back. And he had brought death along with him.
There was no one around. No one to come to his rescue and save him. No one to stay by his side as he gave his final breaths. As he lay down, his body slowly being injected by the snakes poison, he brought out a small bottle. He pulled from his mind in a white wisp, his memories. His past. His life. Contained there until his body was found. He closed his eyes.
I've lived long enough. He thought as his breaths grew shorter and shorter. Its not like I have anything worth living for anymore. A hissing whisper prickled Snape's ear. He opened his eyes. There was the snake. Not even a centimeter away from his face. It stared into Snape's soul with its dark, empty eyes. And with the last of his strength, Snape let out one final word. James.
Hermione opened her eyes. She was lying in the main hall. The thick, stone walls of the castle that had once protected her were destroyed. Large chunks of stone lay across the hall. Everything seemed to be still. Bodies were strewn across the floor, most likely dead. Not even the wind appeared to be moving.
Hermione sat up, and gasped from the pain. She couldn't move her left arm. She had most likely broken it. She slowly pulled off her jacket and wrapped it around her arm like a cast. It would have to do for now.
Carefully, she stood up. She needed to find Ginny. She couldn't see any Death Eaters which was strange. There were no signs of battle or dueling. Something was not right.
Up ahead of her, someone sat crouched by the large front doors, their wand help outward, about to cast a spell. But they didn't move. Nothing was happening.
okay. Hermione thought. I DEFINITELY need to find Ginny.
She walked out the front doors and looked back as she passed the young wizard. A third year maybe. Not even half way through school, and already they've been through so much. Their face was frozen in a scream. No muscles moving and no sound coming out. Just a still, frozen scream.
Hermione looked all around her and realised that not just the one wizard was frozen, but everything. Thundering giants in mid desolation, battling wizards with wands held aloft, even the birds were stuck in mid flight.
She turned a corner and took one of the paths leading to the back of the castle. She wasn't entirely sure why she did, she just had a feeling in her gut that she should.
She came across the back courtyard. But something was off. Hundreds of death eaters and wizards were battling out front, as well as inside the castle, but there was no one here. The only signs of life she could see was a small squirrel hiding underneath a bench, using it as protection against the battle.
As Hermione kept walking, she came across a body lying on the cobblestone. She couldn't tell if they were dead or alive, and there was no one around. She walked up to the seemingly lifeless form and gasped. Lying there, pale faced and definitely dead, was Hermione's potions teacher, Professor Severus Snape.
