The Other Sister
Chapter 4
When they arrived at the race track, it was mostly just drivers that were there. Some fans were already there, probably to get a good parking space, but there weren't many.
Annaline had ridden with Jase, who drove his own truck while his dad drove the one with the race car trailer on it.
"He doesn't trust me with the car when it's on a trailer." Jase told her when she asked why his dad wouldn't allow him to drive the other vehicle. "But, for some reason, he feels like he can trust me with it out on the race track."
"I'm sure he means well." Annaline said. He nodded, a sad look crossing his face. She didn't like that. Sadness didn't suit him. Jase was made to be happy, not sad or worried.
"He does," Jase said. "He does mean well." She could tell that he didn't want to talk about it anymore, so she dropped it. Much like she dropped the conversation about his nightmare.
As they hopped out of his truck, Annaline spotted Eric. Her sister was with him. Of course, Jase's father pulled in and parked close to them.
"Hey you two!" Eric called out, walking over to them. Annalise saw them and followed her boyfriend. "You decide that you actually like the races?" He asked Annaline. She shrugged.
"I don't know. The crowd I'm with is better though." She said, not noticing her sister that was walking up.
"So, you rode up here with Playboy?" Annalise asked, a teasing tone in her voice. It was one Annaline hadn't heard lately; a friendly one. That made her smile; even though she still had to roll her eyes at the nickname her sister had given Jase.
"Yep," Annaline answered, smiling brightly at her sister. She saw her sister's eyes grow soft and slightly worried. "Hey, I'm fine."
"Really?" Annalise asked. She nodded, trying to reassure her sister. "You seemed pretty tired when you got home."
"We took a nap when we got to my house." Jase told her. Annaline was surprised at the civil response he gave, seeing as he wasn't the biggest fan of her sister. Not that she could blame him.
"Good, you needed some more sleep. So, you coming home with me after?" Annalise asked. Annaline shook her head.
"Nah, I think I'm going to stay with Emily and Jase tonight." She said. "So, what happened after they realized I was gone?"
"They weren't too happy, but I explained to them what happened. They seemed pretty sorry for getting on to you when they heard what I had said." Her sister answered. "I'm surprised they didn't try to call you."
"Like Jase said, we took a nap after talking to his family for a bit." She told Annalise. "Besides, I had turned it on silent so I didn't have to listen to their constant calls after they found out I had left."
"I don't blame you," Annalise said. "But, I would try to call them if you get a chance. They seemed pretty upset about what happened."
"I'll try to call them before the races start then." She said. Eric and Jase were just silently watching the two sister interaction. Just then, Jase's father called out to him, saying they needed to make sure the car was race ready. "We've been called back over. I'll see you guys later." She said, turning so she could walk with Jase, even though the trailer wasn't that far away.
"See ya!" Her sister said, turning her attention to her shocked boyfriend.
"That went better than I thought it would." Jase said, throwing his arm around Annaline's shoulder. She just smiled and moved as close as she could to him.
