Chapter 16- Polaris: A New Guide
"I did forget to mention you have to learn to do the healing technique before it can save you, didn't I?" Durv said during combat the next day. "The way the Goldspell first worked was from desperation and will to live. Your will is still not strong enough for its second stage apparently, so I must force it out of you with the strongest instinctive will of all creatures: the will to live. Until then, you have to hope it works or I might end up killing you." As he finished his explanation, Opren had to dodge another series of slashes and attempt to strike back. While he was well matched against the dragon one versus one as long as Goldspell was used, Durv still had an advantage when it came to killing, unless Opren were to kill him first- which was not the idea.
"I'm so glad you overlooked something as insignificant as my potential death!" Opren exclaimed as he was nearly struck with the side of Durv's right wing, followed by his back claws. "Is there no other way to learn to heal the way I'm supposed to be capable of doing?"
"Well, if you discover how to do the technique it won't matter as much anyway... so yes, you must learn the technique to get out of doing it this way," Sera answered for Durv. Opren groaned loudly as he dodged yet another few potentially fatal blows.
This is nearly identical to the first time I fought with Goldspell against the Shirrkks. But I still don't understand how to force my will to make something I don't even know truly can happen happen! What can I do before he catches me with one too many of those strikes? Opren's thoughts were hasty as he blocked two scratches and dodged a flame from Durv's mouth. Or- and especially- that fire!
Opren found a large rock to hide behind temporarily so Durv had no way to breathe fire at him, at very least, but he still had to think- hopefully act- quickly, before the dragon destroyed the rock or just moved around it more quickly than Opren could switch sides. He thought of how the other Runic healing spell worked and decided to use this new spell the same way, except with an addition of willing the Goldspell to give him energy. Durv rounded the rock for a second time- too swiftly for Opren to move in unison- and caught Opren with the tip of his claws. Opren grabbed his right arm where the dragon had scratched, dropping his sword. The wound he meant to heal had vanished! His idea had worked! He spun and picked up his sword simultaneously, facing the dragon head on this time. While the pain was a problem when struck, it was bearable as long as he dodged any flames and he had a plan to win the fight.
As Durv came in for two more strikes, Opren forced the energy to transfer from Goldspell and intentionally allowed himself to be hit, but also managed to strike Durv three times. He successfully healed in an instant once again, catching the dragon off guard and off balance, kicking him hard to knock him to the ground. Opren, now with the advantage, leaped on top of the large creature and pointed his sword at Durv's throat.
"Looks as if you discovered how to heal instantly. Good job. Let's see if you can manage the same strategic victory against both Lot and I," Durv said as Opren changed back to normal and, as usual, was to quickly begin more, more difficult practice.
"Next is the ability to use the energy of the Goldspell in order to cast nearly unlimited spells without tiring. I assume if you discovered how to heal, you must also realize how to pull the enchantment's essence into yourself at this point, so this shouldn't be too difficult, but casting numerous spells will be required when fighting us both," Lot said. "Ready?" Opren nodded.
"Begin!" Durv commanded, already charging as Lot flew into the air. Opren normally would have been ready for the charge, but he already noticed what Lot meant when he said multiple spells would be required when fighting both of the experienced dragon warriors. It was going to be impossible to block two powerful and massive strikes from two directions, especially with one or both being airborne. Opren quickly changed into his Goldspell form and shot two powerful gusts at Lot. He managed to block a claw slash at the end of Durv's charge, but was caught by the dragon's tail.
