Chapter 1: Beginning to Ending
Amanda's POV
"Alright, your appeal is accepted and we'll place you in 1B, if that's okay."
"Yeah, of course."
"Great. Welcome to the school, and I hope you have a pleasant and memorable time in the next four years of studying here."
"Thank you, goodbye!"
My appeal to the secondary school that I eventually decided I wanted to get in upon receiving my primary school leaving examination results was successful. However, due to the hasty appeal I made with the limited time I had left before the closing of the application period, I had no new uniform for the first day. As a result, I would have no choice but to wear my primary school uniform to school on the first day.
How embarrassing! I just hope everything will go fine... Just as I was walking out from the office building of the school to the car park and then out of the school from the main gates, I heard chatter and noise filling the air behind me. Feeling curious, I turned around and saw a crowd of students coming out from the grand auditorium in the office building. Oh right. Today is the first day of the orientation camp for the others who were posted directly to this school or had made an appeal but did it earlier than me at least. What a shame for me to have missed it. Just as I was about turn away, I caught a glimpse of something familiar. Or rather, someone familiar.
Jeremy? Hold on, didn't he go to a boys school? This is a co-ed school... I stared at the face directly in my line of vision in shock and disbelief, but also in delight because this could only mean one thing – I, Amanda Herald, am going to still be in the same school as my best friend Jeremy Kennedy! Things just keep getting better, don't they? I was still afraid I was going to miss him so much if we were going to be in different schools since that meant we wouldn't be able to see each other so often. Now that we are going to be in the same school, we could just hang out whenever wherever. Perfect.
"Jeremy? Jeremy!" I exclaimed aloud and got a few stares in return that clearly told me that I was being weird and crazy as usual, but who cares. He was talking to one of the guys beside him who, I assume, is probably a friend he made during the past several hours earlier in the day. He heard my voice and looked up from his conversation. Upon seeing me, he ran towards me and swept me in a bear hug.
"Amanda? Whatcha doing here? Thought you went to another school?"
"Well, I could ask the very same about you. I just appealed from the school I was posted to this school, anyway."
"Me? I have been posted to this school along! Have you forgotten, scatterbrain? It's my first choice! I'm so ecstatic that you're gonna be here too though! This is just awesome, really. You know, I-"
"Just hold up for a minute. I'm still here you know, don't just leave me out like that!" The guy that I saw Jeremy talk to earlier whined with a fake pout on his face.
We rolled our eyes simultaneously at him.
"Wow look at the rapport here." He flashes a silly grin and looks at me. "Well hello there, I'm Josh. Pretty sure I'll be seeing you around a lot when I hang out with Jeremy huh?"
I smiled in response, and replied, ignoring his comment. "Well, you should have gotten my name already, but if you haven't, it's Amanda. Nice to meet you, I guess."
"I'm always nice to meet, duh." He smirks.
Before I could reply, Jeremy cut in. "Okay now just stop right there would ya Josh? Gonna catch up with her so see you tomorrow!"
"Hey wait-"
"Bye!"
Jeremy grinned and yelled hastily over his shoulder. He led me out of the gates while we walked side by side and we started chatting.
"So you mean it completely didn't occur to you that I came to this school?"
"Yeah well I mean, sorry! You know how absentminded I could be. I don't even know how I got that idea from, that you went to a boys school. Now that I think about it, I think you really told me that this school was your first choice." I stuck out my tongue at him.
"Right. Anyway, let me fill you in on orientation today."
So we ended up talking about all the details in the games and activities during the day earlier on and the different parts of the school compound. He also told me about the new friends he made today other than Josh, and they are Brian and Aaron.
"Don't worry though, you'll always be my best friend." He flashed me a smirk and I slapped his arm.
"You bet. It'd better be!" I smiled widely. It's moments like these that I love the most with him. Everything is so comfortable and fun, it feels like it's perfect, even with what people say about how nothing is perfect.
Just in case you're wondering, Jeremy isn't what you probably have pictured in your head. For starters, he's not the tall, handsome and popular jock with an eight-pack who gets fawned by the entire female population in the school. He's just an ordinary person with ordinary looks and an ordinary life. Just like me. I guess that's what brought us together to become such close friends.
"Earth to Mandy!" Jeremy's voice jolted me out of my reverie.
"Huh?"
"Oh, you're back from Mars. I'm starving. You up for McDonalds?"
"Shut up. Yeah okay, I'm kinda hungry too actually." I made a face at him.
He tugged at my hand and then broke into a run. Surprised by the suddenness of it, I almost tripped but quickly ran along to prevent it from happening.
Just like that, we soon reached the entrance of the nearest McDonalds from school. After finding seats and ordering our food, we sat down and munched away. When we were done eating, we left the restaurant and walked to the bus stop to take the bus back home together. Nope, we don't live near each other, but it just happens that the bus route goes by both of our homes.
"Oh right Jay, I almost forgot to ask you, what class are you in?" I asked curiously after we boarded the bus.
"Eh, 1J. You?" He replied.
"Oh... 1B." I remarked, a little disappointed. It would have been even better if we were in the same class again.
It seemed like he sensed my disappointment, because he said cheerfully, "It's okay y'know, we can always hang out after school or during break time whenever. We can also go back to primary school for visits together. That's got to be better than nothing, right?" He gave me a small smile.
"You're right. Maybe we can go back on your birthday and celebrate with everyone else together." I suggested.
"Yeah that's a good idea! We'll see how it goes when the day is nearing though, because I'm not sure if I'll have plans with my family or anything." He told me.
I agreed, and after a bit more of mindless chatter and random talking, he reached his stop.
"I'll text you alright? See you tomorrow!" He waved happily to me while alighting. "Okay seeya!" I had a goofy grin on my face while I waved back to him. At least tomorrow won't be so bad with me in my primary school uniform, I thought to myself, because there'll be him around to make it better. Thank god for my best friend, really. I just hope I'll make friends as quick as he does too.
