Chapter One - Flashbacks
I had just gotten home from the store when I saw it, sitting there on the marble countertop with the raised gold letters that everyone knew oh so well. I was being drafted, and that's when I figured out that life as I knew it would never be the same again.
The pit I'm sitting in was left by a bomb only minutes ago. Gunfire surrounds me on every side. I try, but fail to escape it. Suddenly, the firing stops. I look around for my ammo box before running back to Combat Force Squad Number Nine Campsite. I stumble into camp to to find that the mail truck has come. My sleeping quarters are off to the right so I head there to see if I got mail.
I sit down roughly at the foot of my bed. Mama's letter sits neatly on my pillow.
That's strange. My mail was never neat let alone anywhere but the ground.
A twig snaps and I stand up spinning around quickly. I come face to, well, chest with someone. I look up and I'm stunned. The most gorgeous pair of ice blue are staring back at me. A boy maybe a year older than me stood there, a smile playing at his lips.
Wow, he's handsome.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. My names Levi," he laughs slightly startled.
I look down embarrased. "No, don't worry about it. Uh... are you new?" I respond quickly not wanting him to feel bad.
Gosh, stupid question, of course he's new. I've never seen him around here before.
"Yeah, I'm new. Anyway, I came to tell you that Captain Mckenley needs to talk to the whole squad." He blushes as he looks down at me.
"Okay, thank you."
Abruptly he turns around and leaves.
Captain Mckenley ends up having a meeting with the squad councel. She tells everyone she is extremely sorry for calling us here for nothing. I decide to stay by the fire a little longer.
The soldiers came a week later to pick me up and bring me to my squad. I hugged Mama and told her not to worry and to be strong in the Lord for he will give you courage to face the tallest mountains. My fouteen-year-old brother, JC, ran over to me and I hugged him tight, a tear running down my cheek. I brush it away without him noticing.
"I'll be home soon. I love you JC, Mama." I try to hide the lie in my voice because the truth is I might not come home at all.
"I love you too, Talia," they reply in unison.
"I promise I'll write you a letter every week!" Mama yells as the soldiers pull me toward the van.
I blow them a kiss as the van doors slam shut.
Suddenly, I am jostled from my memory by a girl named Whitney Conners.
"What are you thinking about?" she asks, sounding intrigued.
"Nothing," I reply, probably sounding bitter. I decide it's time for me to go, and walk briskly back to my sleeping quarters.
