I was just listening to music and then I heard screaming, I thought nothing of it. There's screams in my neighbourhood all the time. That's why I listen to music, to block out the sound. This time nothing could block the sound of these screams.
I climbed out my window onto the roof. I wanted to see what was going on from a safe distance.
At first there was only a few, but then more, and more came. I could outrun them, if I stayed on the roof like a sitting duck I would be surrounded and they would get me. I knew what I had to do.
I took all of my brother's zombie comic books, I grabbed my Dad's guns. I made sure to leave two incase Mom and Dad happened to be alive. I carried my brother out of the house and ran.
It was exhausting. I must've ran for miles. I got so tired I had to put my brother down. We took short breaks in the middle of the road when we got tired.
We were in the middle of one of our breaks and a car pulled over. We were in such luck.
"What are you kids doin' out here alone?" A man in a rusty, dark green, pickup truck rolled down the window to reveal a grungy old man who chewed on a toothpick.
"Please sir. Help us. In town something has gone wrong, there are zombies." I pleaded to the man but he gave us no sympathy.
"I reckon you kids go home. You never know who could be driving on these roads. Your lucky it was a kind old chap like myself. Now skedaddle!"
"Sir, please you don't understand. Zombies, real zombies. They've flooded the town."
"Kids, you've been reading all them silly cartoon books you've got in your hands. I'm going to go into town to get my axe and I'm going to come back. With no stupid zombies gettin' in my way."
I warned him. He didn't listen, that's what got him killed. We never saw that truck again.
We walked to the next town hoping it wasn't infected yet. It wasn't. We tried to warn the people. We went straight to the mayor but when he didn't listen we went knocking on doors. Only one person took us seriously.
"We are witnesses of an infection."
"An infection? What kind? Come in, come in." A man in his mid forties rushed us into his room.
"Explain me everything, in detail."
"I was listening to music, but then I heard screaming. We don't live in the best neighbourhood so I didn't think much of it. I thought my headphones would block out the sounds but there was so much screaming. I climbed to the roof and realized what was happening. Our parents weren't home at the time so I took my brother, and his zombie comic books and left. We met a guy when we were running from the town, he didn't believe us. He said he was going to town to get an axe but he never came back. He's dead." Everything I said intrigued the man more and more.
"Interesting. We have to leave now, they'll be called coming any second." He started to hyperventilate.
"It's alright, let's turn on the news and see what's going on." I tried to reassure him but it wasn't really working.
"I'm scared." Those were the first words that came out of my brother's mouth every since we've fled the house. This must be hard for him, he's only 8.
"I'm going to protect you no matter what. That is a promise. I love you." He was the person who meant the most to me. He was my boy family left, assuming my parents have been infected.
"Let's go, get in the car." He rushed us out the door.
"The name is Cliff." That was the only thing that was said during the whole, long, anxious car ride.
Cliff took us to a strange bunker. I didn't listen to what he was telling us, I was too busy listening to my music. I regret not listening to him, that's what got the pick up truck guy killed.
