Chapter Fifteen

You know what I realized? I don't have a date for the Fire and Ice ball. And it's TOMORROW! I know we've discussed this before while getting my dress. And this is probably one of the most important dances anybody and everybody has been waiting for. And when I say this, it's bigger than Prom. But I've been so occupied, I totally forgot to ask someone! Or even been asked. I can't think of anyone on the top of my head. What am I going to do?

I groaned into my pillow. Frustrated was an understatement. I really don't want to be that friend that third wheels in the group. Ariel had Greyson - they weren't dating, but they were definitely talking since the hotel. Jasper and Luke were taking girls from the dance team. Sawyer is still nowhere to be seen. And then there's me - alone. The lonely sheep of the flock.

My phone started going off breaking me out of my messy thoughts. It was Jace. I smiled to myself.

"Oh my gosh, Jace! Where has he been?"

I know you're probably all asking yourself that. Jace and I have kept in touch since the hospital, but its been so hard making plans with everything going on, and him being stuck in the hospital on bed rest all the time. But today, we finally made time for each other. I glanced at the message, him notifying me that he was here. I squealed in excitement, and threw my phone onto my bed and hurried downstairs faster than you can say "Jace is here". I opened the door to see him smiling there. And should I mention he had very very messy hair? The last time I saw him, he didn't have a full set of hair due to the chemo, but he's looking a lot better. Especially because they let him come here for the day. So, that seemed to be good news.

"Oh Jace, it's so good to see you!" I embraced him into a big warm hug, his arms engulfing me.

"Likewise."

"What would you like to do for the day? It can be anything you want."

Jace scratches the back of his head. "Honestly, anything. You don't know how boring it gets back at home. Always stuck in bed or in my room in general, or even with the others doing some sort of arts and crafts. Something dangerous or where I can get hurt." He chuckled at the last part and put his hands up in offense. "Only joking."

"Well, I might have a few ideas." I folded my arms around my chest and smirked. "But-"

"-But what?"

"My dad's actually home, and I was thinking you guys could hangout for a little. Then we can head out for the day. Sound good?"

Jace's eyes lit up 10 times more brighter than I have ever seen them. When we came to an agreement, I lead him to my dad's study. My dad and him exchanged handshakes and got engrossed into a conversation about my dad's work. I excused myself from the boys so I could finish getting ready. I know how much Jace respects my dad and his work, and I think the least I could do for him was let him meet his inspiration and hero. I had already showered before Jace arrived, so all I really needed to do was my makeup and get out of these Star Wars pajamas. I knew I wanted to take Jace to Holiday's Diner, since he's never been as well show him around town and go to some of my favorite places.

I looked at myself in the mirror and smiled. I grabbed my phone off the bedside table and my car keys, and headed back towards my dad's study. I peered through the cracked door and saw Jace and my dad watching a film on the projector screen and discussing details. It made me happy to see Jace so care free. He's had a hard life and that broke my heart. When I had met him, he told me he was 13 when he first got Leukemia; it was scary for him to be so young and to be losing his hair, his bones would ache constantly, and always feel like he was running a fever, but have the chills. He's been battling it for 4 years now, and practically lives at the hospital. He seems to be doing a lot better recently, and if by any miracle, we're hoping this is his year. I was able to visit him often in the hospital as my mom had her treatments for her breast cancer. The doctor said we were lucky to catch it sooner than the last time, and there's a high percentage she can fight it off again. I knocked on the door to let them know I was there. Jace looked at me and had the biggest smile and I couldn't help but smile back. His smiles were contagious.
