I was sitting on the couch waiting for Katie who suggested to watch some sappy film and spend some time together. We've been occupied with school, work, and other stuff and barely see each other.
I reached for the remote to change the channel and frozen. With his piercing blue eyes in an impeccable black suit there stood Damien in front of the cameras, I increased the volume to hear his domineering voice. There were few reporters holding mics towards him. He looked straight into one camera and focused as if he was seeing me.
"The case is dismissed, in my opinion, which was already nonsuited. All the charges against me and my colleagues are dropped. We proved that we are respectable, hardworking citizens and businessmen who don't easily abstain from taking the necessary actions to maintain peace in our country and guard the interests of our citizens. I appreciate every one of you for your unlimited support. Whoever preferred to backstab us by hurting the ones we love, instead of standing beside us will be taken care of, we will reach them soon and unexpectedly for we never forget but forgive. We will offer them peace eternally. I suggest them to stay put and wait for us." He slightly nodded and ignored the questions and turned around, and was about to step into his limo.
An insisting reporter followed him and yelled behind his back. "Mr. Carneglia! Even after the attack caused by your rivals that are your wife's relatives, you are still married to her. What commonwealth would like to know is...."
She was cut by Damien instantly. He scowled at her. "This information is something not belong to commonwealth but me and it is private Miss.." he trailed off waiting for the reporter to tell her name. "Calvin. From Times," she replied.
"As I was saying this matter is private and I suggest you stay out of it." he smiled coldly.
She was oblivious to his demeanor. She pushed her luck one more time. "What mostly the young women wants to know is, will you become an eligible bachelor again soon?" she grinned and ogled openly. Before Damien returned to the vehicle he gritted his teeth.
"Miss. Calvin you are crossing lines here." he stopped as if some bright idea occurred to his mind. He turned around and approached the camera once again. "However, I may still appear to be married on paper to my so called wife, she is dead to me. So you can define me as a bachelor." he grinned and winked.
I turned off the TV still shocked and dumbstruck.
Katie was standing behind me leaning on the couch I was glued. "Em, are you okay sweetie? Did she sound worried and guilty?
"He is alive" I whispered.
"Em, it doesn't mean anything, he won't come for you again don't worry. You are safe here, you know, with your new life and identity. Ethan and I took care of everything you can count on that."
My Damien was alive. That unfortunate day where all hell broke loose, I was convinced to believe that he was dead. I mourned, oppressed with grief for months. I hid in Ethan's new apartment until all Russians confirmed to be death including Natalie. Ethan swore that both parties were diminished from the world and went to hell, unaware of the fact that he was hurting me by telling me that the man I love is dead. He and Katie, they all thought that I was deluded by him and his ways with me and they tried to persuade me that I never truly loved him.
Whatever they say to persuade me otherwise, I was in love with him, whoever he was, a monster, a murderer, a gangster didn't matter, he was mine.
"I need to find him" I panicked and stood up. "I need to tell him" I was hyperventilating. "He has to know." Katie held my arms and soothed me. "Breath Em, just breath. He will not find you and you can't go to him. This is a bad idea." She didn't understand, she never would.
